Pillowtop mattresses or not?

DH and I spent some time this weekend looking at mattresses at the Original Mattress Factory and we found two that we liked. One is a pillowtop, while the other is not. I'm hesitant to buy any pillowtop b/c I've seen some negative reviews so if you ladies have any extra insight on whether or not the pillowtop mattresses are worth the extra money, I'd certainly appreciate some advice!

Re: Pillowtop mattresses or not?

  • We didn't buy one for a few reasons

#1:  it was more expensive than getting a mattress topper.  We ended up getting a memory foam topper at Costco for about $80

#2:  some of them only have the pillow-top on one side of the mattress.  This means you are limited in the ways that you can flip your mattress.  We thought this would leave to more "dents" in the mattress leading us to replace it sooner

#3:  DH was very concerned that the mattress would be too tall for the mattress pad and sheets to stay on.  I don't think this is a huge concern, especially since they make deep sheets and mattress covers now, but just throwing it out there!

  • DH and I are mattresses shopping too and I think we're going to go with the pillow top. I just thought it was more comfortable, and the one we saw could be flipped if needed. I kept thinking on the non-pillow top one that I still needed some cushion too. I also didn't like the rounded edges as much on the non-pillow top one. It almost felt like I was laying on an incline if I got close to the edge.
  • DH and I do have a pillow top, and while it was very comfy when we first got it, it now has two "dents" in it and we can't flip it to alleviate this problem.  it also hurts my back!   So I would say, skip the pillow top, buy the best quality mattress you can, and buy a pillow topper from Costco, Sam's etc if you must!  :-)
