Casinos

Do you or H like to gamble?  I've heard the Hard Rock is fun.  We've also thought about going to the Firelake Casino in Shawnee? H and I aren't huge gamblers, but we thought it might be fun to take a little mini trip one night to check them out.

Anyone been to these two?  Reviews?

Re: Casinos

  • H likes to gamble every now and then; I'm not a big fan, but I'll play the slots when we go to Vegas.

One of my friends threw a bachelor party at Hard Rock and had a ton of fun. Haven't heard much about Firelake...but I've heard good things about Hard Rock. Great atmosphere, good food, good hotel...that's about all I've heard so far.

  • Part of H's family goes to Firelake at least once a week.  They do a lot of matchplay type promotions so it is easy to walk out of there ahead.

I have never been to the Hard Rock casino but I have heard that it doesn't live up to most expectations.

  • I'm kind of bitter about casinos. I think it's because there have been two put in the area in the past 3ish years and I just feel like they're "trashing" it up. They've put them in in spots that were once "the middle of nowhere" countryside... now there are these big tacky casinos. I don't like it.

As for gambling, it's not my thing. I've probably been to the casino a handful of times and I just don't enjoy it - I can think of so many other things I'd like to spend my money on. We went to the Hard Rock in Tulsa a few months ago to check it out. We didn't do any gambling, but we had a couple of drinks at their snazzy little bar and looked around at all the musical memorabilia (sp?) they've got. It's kind of neat.

  • we don't gamble.  Well, I take that back, we went to a casino on our honeymoon and decided we were going to gamble $20.  After about 5 we realized it wasn't fun and left :)

We went to Firelake a few years ago with one of H's friends from HS when he was in town.  We didn't stay long because I was pg and it was smoky, but it looked like the people there were having fun!

  • We're not big gamblers. We went to the Hard Rock in August and it was *ok*.... I guess I was expecting too much. We like Vegas too, but we don't spend a lot of money gambling there.

It's kind of ridiculous for people to play thinking they're actually going to win a lot of money. When/if we do play, it's basically just for entertainment.

  • I went with some friends to Hard Rock. I wasn't too impressed but then again I'm a huge gambler. When DH and I first moved up here we went to the Riverwind. I actually won $60! The casino was nice. We go to that one ocassionally only if there is a good concert there.

  • Geez, I hate the casinos in OK. I don't get it. ???

DH used to go, maybe 3x a year in college, to play poker.

  • We aren't big gamblers, but we do like to go for fun.  We'll eat dinner, play a little, and have a few drinks.

I wasn't impressed with Firelake when we went a couple months ago.  The food was terrible and the decor was not impressive.

We live about a mile from Hard Rock so we've been several times.  It's fun, lots of rock memorabilia to look at, great restraunts and hotel, fun bars, live music.  If you do decide to go there definately eat at McGill's on the 19th floor, it's so good.

Have you guys considered Winstar?  I think that casino is so neat.  They have it set up as different countries and there are themed restraunts in each country.

  • We've only been to River Wind.  We really only gamble when we go to Vegas and then just like to play craps.  Oklahoma casinos just seem cheesy to me.
  • DH and I are not gambling people at.all.  We've never even gambled at an Oklahoma casino.  We went to the casino in Kansas City in March, both spent about $25, and called it a night.

My HS reunion last month was at Firelake Grand, but we didn't gamble.
  • This is totally late since schoo is taking over my life, but FWIW:

H and I both worked at Riverwind for 3 years. It's a Chickasaw owned casino, along with WinStar and most other casinos south of the Canadian River. Being as I know first-hand how the machines work (or don't work), I don't care for gambling. My co-workers and I would go out after getting off work and blow $20 of our tip money out of sheer boredom, because we knew how the patterns on the machines work. Basically, a majority of the casinos in OK are considered Class II, which means they aren't chance. They play off a bingo pattern. Even if you got three 7's on a Mr. Moneybags machine, if the bingo pattern didn't match up you end up with zilch.

As for table games, dice games are illegal in the state of OK, which is why you'll see ridiculous roulette tables and craps games with cards and sans dice. Poker is pretty straight forward, if you're into that.

FWIW, there's free ice cream at Firelake! So, live it up and get free root beer floats. :)
