Baby showers

I know some of you *ahem, SBS* are becoming experienced baby shower throwers. Right now I'm in the midst of planning a shower for my bff, and just starting my SIL's. Fortunately bff's is basically themed out and planned, but I'm having trouble envisioning SIL's.

It needs to be very basic and easy, since I'm pretty sure I'll be doing everything except for food. I already have the invites drafted http://i55.tinypic.com/r1ius9.jpg, but I could use some ideas.

Thanks!

Re: Baby showers

  • To keep it simple, run with a color scheme. Napkins, plates, table cloths, etc. in a grouping of colors. Target usually has some nice patterned wrapping paper with matching tableware. That's what we used at the last shower I threw.  You could use the invitation colors or go with a completely different color scheme.  A couple of inexpensive flower arrangements and helium balloons in the colors will add pops at different eye levels.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • We're on the same page!  I love a lot of crafty themes, but it may just be easier to play off the invites I designed. Basically using the color palette (blue, teal, and green) and running with it. And using lots of those color balloons!

    Baby Shower Party Room

I think I need to learn to make a diaper cake too. Oy.

I'm gonna tell you right now, they're not easy. I've never made one without the help of at least one other person. Still, here's a sorta-tutorial in my craft blog: http://craftedbycolette.blogspot.com/2010/03/diaper-cake.html

I will say recently we've done all diapers rather than the onsies on the top layer, and it looks much more clean.

I'd go with colors too. Another decor item is to buy onesies or outfits and hang them on a clothesline around the room -- it's decor + a gift in one! You can also leave space on the clothesline and if other people buy/bring outfits, you can clip them up as well (that seems to be the gift everyone likes looking at the most).

    Do you need game ideas?

OH! And one more thing. Don't tell the guests when/where the baby was conceived. Someone on the Entertaining Ideas board is planning a shower and the momma-to-be wants everyone to know that they conceived the baby on vacation. I think that's totally weird (and I told them that on the board).

  • My sisters are throwing my baby shower in about 2.5 weeks and it will be mother goose themed. Snacks are based on nursery rhymes. Humpty Dumpty = deviled eggs. Jack & Jill = pail with water bottles.

  • I like what you've got so far - keep it simple.  I would go with your invitation colors and play off that.  Love the idea of putting onesies on a clothesline - I've seen people do it over a fire place mantle or similar and its really cute.

If you dont want to tackle making the diaper cake - check Craigslist, around here there are advertisements for people making them all the time and they really aren't that expensive.

Is there a nursery theme that you could pull some more ideas from?  One I went to last year used a Dr Seuss theme in the nursery so the host framed quotes from Dr Seuss books and used them as the centerpieces on each of the tables.

  • I like the color theme idea.  I've also always wanted to make this banner for a shower/party:

  • More ideas...

Your colors actually lend themselves well to an Under the Sea theme, if you wanted a more theme-y route. Personally, I think this is an ugly diaper cake (I don't like the ribbon, the bow, or the stupid platter it's on, but it's an option...and you can probably fix the ugly parts...), but it is themed: http://www.advantagebridal.com/undertheseadiaper.html. I noticed in the picture you posted stuffed animals as centerpieces -- you could use ocean stuffed animals, like octopuses and whales and sharks.

At the last couple baby showers I've been to, here have been the games/activites. Let me know which ones you'd like more detail about:

    1. Draw/color/sign a quilt square for the baby. One of the momma-to-be's friends is a quilter and put all the pieces together for her once the baby was born. Here's what mine looked like:

    image

    2. Guess how big the mom's tummy is

    3. "Bet" on which day/time the baby will be born

    4. Don't say "baby"

    5. How many ____ in that? (diapers in the cake, candy in a bottle, etc)

    6. Match the celebrity to their baby's weird name

    7. Write the mom & baby notes for the first year

    8. Memory game with candy prizes -- this game is pretty cool

    9. Scattergories style game

    10. Paper plate Picasso
