Need some ideas...

My mom turns 50 in December and she doesnt want a party but we want to surprise her somehow.  I've been talking to my sister and my dad and we are thinking of having my dad take her to Chicago and the rest of us meet them there.  (It's a lot cheaper to fly to Chicago than Iowa and we're thinking there will be a lot more options for things to do.)

But that's where I need some help... what to do?  My mom pretty much hates cold weather so I need to find mostly indoor activities.  Anyone know of anything fun/Christmas-y to do in Chicago (we'll be there the weekend of Dec 18th)?  It'll be 4 guys/3 girls so as much as I would love to shop, the guys would hate me and I'll be almost 8 months pregnant so I'm looking for things that dont involve walking for miles and such too.

Re: Need some ideas...

  • Are there any concerts or sporting events going on that she might like?

Just an FYI - I'm not sure of how you plan on traveling there but according to my dr. they will not let you on a plane after 34 weeks and that is with no complications so that may be something you need to keep in mind when planning.

Yeah - I'm a little worried about travelling but luckily we can drive to Chicago (its about 4.5 hours from us) but we'll be making the 6.5 hour trip to Iowa for Thanksgiving and Christmas as well.  Super fun - I'm really looking forward to those drives, at least we have 4WD now in the truck.

I'm leaning towards The Nutcracker since that seems to be about the only show that she might want to see.  I wish she was a little bit easier, but I'm thinking the show Saturday afternoon, maybe a little shopping, a couple nice dinners and we're about of time for the weekend.

I think this actually sounds like a perfect plan. I was going to suggest The Nutcracker or (if you can find it/she'd be interested) seeing if a symphony or choir (or combo!) is doing a Christmas concert.

  • The store windows will be all decorated for Christmas. Going to see the tree at Macy's on State Street is a big thing. Ice skating is also really popular and traditional, but that would not help avoid the cold.

There are TONS of good restaurants, etc.!

Do you have any restaurant rec's for a nice but not super expensive (maybe somewhere between $20-$40 a plate) steak/seafood place in downtown Chicago?  We're hoping to stay on Michigan Ave.

  • I'm not sure on the prices of these, but here are some good places that are right downtown (near Michigan Ave):

    Ruth's Chris Steak House

    Hugo's Frog Bar

    Gibson's

    Morton's

    McCormick & Schmick's (seafood)

Also, my favorite Chicago style pizza is hands-down Giordano's, but there is also Gino's East or Lou Malnati's to try!

  • I was gonna suggest a restaurant, too.  Something nice and fancy.  I don't know of specific ones in that area, but I'm sure there are lots!

Thank you thank you - have you ever been to Wildfire?  I'm thinking of making reservations there for one of the nights.

  • I haven't been to the Wildfire downtown, but there is one in a nearby suburb that I have been to. It is generally good and has a good reputation!

We went to Catch 35 (http://www.catch35.com) when we were in Chicago in August. The food was great!  Not far from Michigan Ave either. We also went to House of Blues a few times, which was fun (if you're into live music).

  • **butting in** long time, no talk ladies -

hawki - try table 52 (it's ridiculously good, and close to michigan ave) but you definitely need reservations. also, ditka's is awesome and they have a guy that sings during the holidays in the bar upstairs (which is now nonsmoking) that looks like he belongs in the Soprano's but he's fantastic.

i would also recommend the top of the hancock tower for drinks/apps (nonalcoholic for you, obvs!) for an awesome view of the entire city.

i second giordano's pizza, it's the best in the city. hands down.
