NER: Passengers overpower mid-air hijacker

ANKARA, Turkey - A hijacker was overpowered by passengers as he attempted to commandeer a Turkish Airlines plane, an official said on Wednesday.

A spokeswoman for airport operator TAV said the assailant was overpowered after saying he had a bomb strapped to his body.

NTV television and Dogan news agency said the plane was on its way to St. Petersburg, Russia. The hijacker was disarmed over Belarus.

  • In the post 9/11 world, anyone who pulls something like this will be dealing with a lynch mob at 30,000 feet. Plus those Turks don't play!!!

  • That is insane! Absolutely crazy.
  • OMG. Good for the passengers. If I were on that flight I know I would go insane and probably kill that guy. Fear of flying + drugs + drinks + lack of sleep = anti-terrorist crusader. Either that or I'd have a fear-filled heart attack and die right there in my seat...

You forgot option (c) . While the passengers are holding him down, you could give him a Spankin' !!!

Wow.  But how could they assure that the bomb didn't go off?

...And how did a guy get on a plane wearing a bomb??

If you assume a likely alternative is have the hijacker fly your plane into a building, killing you as well as thousands of others, you are probably going to take that chance.

9/11 put hijackers out of business.
