It looks like I'm going to get a job offer, but I don't know if I should take it, and I would like some objective opinions. It's a really good job. High visibility and at the top of my career field. Very demanding. Right now I have a good job that is not very demanding and very flexible. I work about 30 hours a week now, which is a nice balance for my 5-year-old son. New job would be full time, but some of the extra time working would be off-set by less time commuting. WWYD
Pros of new job:
More opportunity
Back to work I really love doing
More money, as job is full-time (hourly rate would be the same)
Easier commute -- 20 minutes by bus vs. 1.5 hours driving
Cons of new job:
Longer hours
Less flexibility in hours
Really cramped office space with no privacy

This is just my opinion.
I would take the new job. Its only ten more hours a week, and although the flexibility is nice now, you will enjoy doing something you love again and it sounds like a lateral move for sure...

Congratulations! If your financial situation is steady without extra pay and you think you'd enjoy the new job better, take the new job! But will this give you less time with your 5-year old son? Many children at this age are still developing their sense of security.
If finances are more of an issue, will the costs of after school care offset the extra income you'd be making?
Maybe this is such a difficult question because both options are good. It sounds like a win win and you just need to decide if you would prefer the work atmosphere and potential career growth or the flexibility to be there when your son needs you and the extra time to prepare meals, help with homework, etc.

How much do you take advantage of and depend on your current flexibility.....
If you spend all your flexible time doing cool stuff with your kid that makes you happy, would losing that equalize the extra job satisfaction you would get by changing jobs? Also, If you depend on that flexibility to take care of your kid, you might need it ? although you probably don?t really need it.
Are you sure that the new job is not flexible? Lots of bigger companies that are ?top of their field? do have flexibility?just in other ways. You probably have some PTO and it seems that larger companies give more of it. Plus if you have a good relationship with those you work with, it is very likely they would understand if something important comes up last minute. Plus being closer to home gives you more flexibility in getting home when you need to.
Lastly, you are not a bad mom for choosing to do either of these options as long as you pick the best option for your family overall. Don't think losing some of your flexible time makes you seem like you care less about spending time with your son and don't think that not taking a job which would provide additional money and better career advancement means you don't care about his future well being.
