Potentially moving to area and need advice....

I currently live in Upstate NY and am looking for my first post graduate school job.  I'm talking to a company in Ward Hill, MA.  I am currently wondering if I were to get the job, where I should live.  Any advice?  I'm single so the cost of living is an important factor.

Re: Potentially moving to area and need advice....

  • I am not THAT familiar with that area and I had honestly not heard of Ward Hill before.  I took a look at a map and it looks like it is near North Andover which is pretty nice.  You could also look just over the border in NH.  My cousin works in Lawrence and lives in Windham, NH.  I don't think her commute is TOO bad and she likes where she lives.
  • I had to look up Ward Hill too and don't know anything about the area, unfortunately.  I suspect it's a relatively cheap area to live in since it's out by 495.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

Not gonna lie, that's one of the more ridiculous things I've heard. There are towns that lie on 495 that are crazy expensive (in that area Andover is a big one!). There are cheaper places but then we're talking Lawrence or Haverhill, and there is a reason they are cheaper than Andover, if you kwim.

  • As I understand it, Ward Hill is part of Haverhill.  You could probably find a relatively affordable place in Haverhill, and it's not a bad city to live in.  I think Newburyport is very nice and it wouldn't be a bad commute from there.  Lawrence may be tempting for low rents but I would not live there.  North Andover is fine but nothing special, and I'm not sure how you'd do finding 1 BR places there.

Honestly, if you are just out of grad school and moving to MA, I think you would be kind of bored living out in the suburbs by yourself if you don't know anyone.  If I were you I might be willing to deal with a longer commute and a smaller place and livng in Somerville.  It would give you many more opportunities to go out and meet people and do things in your free time.  JMO from seeing what my friends have done.

haha yeah.  Just because a town is along 495 does not mean it's cheap.  I grew up in a very NOT cheap town that is right on 495 and I know of plenty more.

I agree with bostonbaker.  If you're single and a student, I feel like it would be easy to get bored living in the suburbs by yourself.  I'd look into renting in one of the towns just north of the city and commuting.

Ha, clearly as I said I don't know much about that area.  I'm not one to live too far out from Boston so you can ignore my misinformation.  Good luck with your search!  And thanks for that constructive comment, jCam.

  • I love in North Andover, just down the street from Ward Hill. Ward Hill is part of the Bradford section of Haverhill. There are many cute apartments in Bradford but not an exciting social life. In the downtown area of Haverhill, there are some bars and restaurants but not somewhere you may want to live. That area is less exspensive than areas closer to Boston. Good Luck

I think it is strange that Haverhill has these sections that people refer to by name as if they are independent towns.  It is all the same school system right?  I don't really understand it.

  • I live in Andover (rent, not own) and it is EXPENSIVE! But Haverhill actually isn't too bad. There are good parts and bad. It's actually growing into a nice little city. They have a great "arts" district with a lot of nice bars and restaurants and stuff. They have a TON of apartments and the prices are pretty good. Just depends on what area you are moving to as to how nice it is! Stay away from Lawrence, though! :) There is Andover and North Andover. Though there aren't many apartment buildings in Andover.

You could also look in Salem, NH to live. We used to live there before moving to Andover. Tons of apartments & apartment buildings, no tax! And tons of retail!!!!! The commute to Ward Hill/Haverhill isn't bad at all! :)

  • I dont understand it either. I guess its most like Boston has different sections. Its all the same school district but it is a very nice part on the town.
