Mercury Hall and/or Hummingbird House

More wedding questions....

Tomorrow, my MIL and I are heading out to look at Mercury Hall and Hummingbird House. Right now, they are in the lead for reception sites for my sister in law.

Anyone have opinions on either of them?? Any questions or concerns we should ask them about?

Thank you awesome nesties!

Re: Mercury Hall and/or Hummingbird House

  • It's been a while since I looked at Mercury Hall, but when we were scounting venues, we decided pretty early that it cost way too much for a place that didn't really include much with the venue rental (I think it was something like $4,000, and they didn't even include tables and chairs. ugh). I've actually been to a couple of events there, and while it is a pretty little place, it doesn't really have a "wow" factor.
  • I never thought it would be so hard to find a reception venue near downtown that had inside space for 150 people and wasn't super super expensive. Half of the places we have looked at are already booked for next July! Ugh! So frustrating! She is getting married downtown at the Catholic Cathedral.

She is currently living in Georgia so my MIL and I are trying to help out.

  • Have you looked at Chateau Bellevue? It's on 7th and San Antonio. It was on my short list but cut it a tad too close on the guest list.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

I agree with this.  The actually inside of the building is super duper small.  We just went to a wedding there in June.  They got married outside and although the ceremony was pretty, I don't think that it was amazing by any means.  The reception was half inside and half outside and in my opinion it just didn't flow well.  DH and I sat at a table outside and the bride and groom's table was inside and it just didn't seem like there was any connection between both groups. For the price, there are definitely better venues, IMO.

  • I actually like the inside of Mercury Hall - it's kind of rustic and nostalgic if you like that kind of thing - but I'm not sure it would hold 150 people. We went to a lovely wedding there and I think they had about 100 guests. It seemed like kind of a tight fit for dinner and dancing. The band was kind of packed into one corner and the bar into another and the dance floor was pretty small.

Have you tried the The Mansion? I know a few people who hosted receptions there and they all had good experiences with it.

  • Wow--things have changed at Mercury Hall!  I got married there 5 years ago, and with 75 guests and a small dance space, we thought it was a tight squeeze.  Plus, we paid around half of the current price!
  • I went to a reception at the Caswell house a few years ago and it was really nice.
  • The Mansion is already booked. I am going to look into Caswell House and Chateau Bellevue! This is already getting really frustrating!
