Edit: Subbing question

I am going to go around to certain schools and ask to put my business card in teachers mailboxes along with a little note about myself and subbing for them... do you think it would be good to include my resume so the teachers can see my experience, or is that weird? Thanks!

Edit: I am already in two districts to sub, but would like to get my name out to more teachers. Here teachers can call and request certain subs or secretaries call subs they know. I always leave a note for the teacher when i sub, saying I would love to come back, but I want to get my name out to more teachers since most like to use the same subs. This was why i was going to put the info in their boxes...

Re: Edit: Subbing question

  • At least where I'm at the teachers don't pick the subs, the administration does.  Everyone I've known that has subbed has had to talk to the superintendent

  • For most schools you have to put in an application to sub.  I would check the schools' websites..a lot of them will have something about subbing in their employment section.
  • All our subs are hired by the district in a district pool- and that pool is closed right now due to the high number of laid off teachers who are subbing now. We have to call in and if you know a specific sub you can put in their number and hopefully get them, otherwise you don't get a choice.

  • We can request particular subs, so not necessarily a bad idea if that is the case in your district. However, I would not do your resume -- I'd be too concerned with identity theft.

Unfortunately I am going into my second year of being in the subbing pool and my goal with every sub job is to be called back by that teacher. I am on the sub lists for districts but I am also working with a company that teachers can request me.

Anyway- I act as a service for the teachers I sub for. At the end of the day I leave a detailed note of what happened in each subject/period. For example:

Math- most seemed to understand the lesson. Tyler seemed to struggle a bit

L.A.- The students worked well in their groups but we didn''t have time to do the read aloud.

At the end of the note I kiss butt a bit and tell the teacher what a great time I had and would love to come back with my name, phone number for further questions and my Sub ID depending on the district.

I get requested quite a bit and have been recognized by a few principals...but no one is hiring now = (

This at least gets the teacher to talk about you and reference you to other teachers! Good luck!

  • We get to pick and, honestly, I have three subs I've used in the last five years.  I trust all of them and they are awesome.  While I think a resume would be weird, a note posted in the lounge would be good.  Also, be sure to leave contact information when you sub - if I have someone who followed plans and was well-received by my kids, I request them.  DO include your e-mail address - I have to go across the building to call and usually don't if it's the only info I have.

  • Not being a teacher myself, but knowing some, I know that here you have to apply to the school board to be a sub (and then go through the interview process), and be recommended by a principal just to get on the list. Once you're on the list, you can potentially be requested, but if there is no request made, they just work down the list until they find someone to come in on any given day. Some teachers will make requests, some won't.

Getting your name out can't hurt (more requests), but I'd skip the resume also. Just leave a nice personal note, and if they want to know more, they can contact you. I don't know if the principal recommendations are required where you are, but many teachers who don't have jobs will go in and volunteer in the schools to get their names out, and to get to know the principals.

    Life is good today.
  • If you are already in a pool then you could either go and put cards in boxes, or see if they have a sub board/wall at the site. We have a whiteboard in our staff lounge that the subs can write their name and sub number on.
  • A sub last year put her sub info on a magnet, which I think you can get for free or very cheap through Vista print. Worked well for my mentor because it was attached to her file cabinet next to her phone.
  • Once you sub, you could leave a card. If I thought that sub did a good job I would request him or her the next time. If a random card showed up in my mailbox it would go into the recycling.

  • I teach 3rd grade but subbed for years.

I wouldn't leave a resume.  I agree that it's weird but also, I wouldn't take the time to read it.  I had business cards made up with name, cell #, email (personal and school). I bought the magnetic backing for them and put it on. I came back to sub in several rooms to find my card stuck on something close to the computer or phone.  I always schmoozed with the teachers in rooms near by.  When I was leaving for the day I would thank them for all their help and ask if I could leave a card with them.   At my school I've seen a cute little pouch that a sub made and put her cards in.  It sits right across from our mailboxes.

Be sure to leave detailed notes, not "The day went fine."  If you didn't get to something let the teacher know why.  Let him/her know about problem kids, trust me, it won't be a surprise!  I also suggest eating in the staff lounge.  Get your name and face out there!  Be social!  You can also leave your card with the secretary.  They sometimes arrange subs.

    Good luck!

  • Subs do what you (OP) describe all the time on my campus, and nine times out of ten I just throw the cards away.  I'll only keep them if the sub is someone I know can handle a classroom or if they're given to me by a colleague who's been impressed by the sub.  Based on my experience I would leave them along with your detailed notes after you complete a job, but wouldn't waste the money and effort to put them in individual teachers' boxes.

Question for you... what info do you leave on the business cards? Name, #, email? I'd think you wouldn't have an address, but I could be wrong... and anything else you have on there? I do like the magnet idea!

  • Personally, I would be a little bit annoyed if I had business cards and resumes from subs in my mailbox at school and would probably ask the secretaries why that was in my mail.    A post on the mail room bulletin board (maybe right above the copier!)  or in the faculty break room with tear off contact # might be a better idea.

  • I know what you're talking about because my district handles subs the same way. Definately ask about putting your card in teachers boxes!

this.  and i wouldn't read your resume, so you can save the work there.  i'm looking for someone who will follow my plans the best that they can, let me know if there was a deviation and why, and is able to control and manage the class well.  it doesn't really matter to me what your degree is in or what your work experience is.
