ring around the toilet-not rust

moved into our house in late June and I have scrubbed and scrubbed. they were not dirty people at all and we live in the same city as we always have so I wouldn't think its a water issue. The ring is blackish, I have not tried bleach or anything more than regular toilet bowl cleaner and brush yet. I thought of trying the vinegar/baking soda trick or barkeepers friend. Any suggestions?

TIA!

Re: ring around the toilet-not rust

  • not trying to be snarky but yes I did see that and that is why I put not rust in my title, but if you think the same answers would apply then thanks for your help and I am sincere about the thanks.

  • a pumice stone will remove pretty much any stain from the toilet (or any other porcelain surface).
In case you're wondering where everyone went: http://pandce.proboards.com/index.cgi
  • Try turning off the water supply to your toilet (there should be a shut off valve behind the toilet). Flush the toilet to remove all water. Sprinkle comet cleanser or barkeepers friend all over the inside of the bowl. Let it sit for awhile, then put on some rubber gloves, grab a plastic scrubby, and go to it. Sometimes a toilet bowl needs a good helping of elbow grease to get it clean.
  • Hi!  You might try CLR.  (Yellow spray bottle called Calcium, Lime, Rust) - it has helped me get our mystery stains out.

    Good Luck!

  • I did try barkeepers friend but didn't let it sit. Never thought about a pumice stone either but may try that too. Thanks for the suggestions!

  • CLR will get rid of anything. But, you can also try a liter of coke.  It sounds funny, but my mom uses it to clean her bathrooms all the time.  It works!!!
