Question from a visitor about Downtown Atl

Please forgive the stupidity of the question.  I am planning a trip to the Imagine it! Children's Museum in Altanta.  I looked up directions and it says from I-85/75 South to exit at 249C (Williams St).

Then it gave alternate directions "for weekends when Williams Street is closed".    Here is my question:

Is Williams Street closed every weekend (I'm going to the Museum this Sunday, the 12th) or just certain ones?  And how would I find out?

Also, I am coming from South Carolina so will be taking I-85 south.  The directions say to merge on I-75 South, will I see a sign telling me where to merge?  Sorry I'm not from the area and just don't want to get lost alone with my 18 month old.

Thanks for your help!

Re: Question from a visitor about Downtown Atl

  • I can't tell you about the street being closed because we're pretty new here ourselves (moved from SC about 2 months ago), but there will definitely be signs ahead of time to let you know where you have to go.  Do you have a GPS or just following mapquest?  Either way, you should be fine but just be prepared for traffic as you get closer to downtown...it's terrible!  But have fun!!!
  • I don't think Williams is closed every weekend - maybe just for construction or when large events are in town.  You might be able to check the DOT website to see if there's a closure scheduled.

85 merges into 75 and becomes 75/85 as you head into downtown - it's not a separate exit/merge.  Just keep driving south and you'll be fine.

  • look at this map - you will be coming down I-85 from SC. So as you can see 85 and I-75 become one huge interstate at one point. You will keep heading southbound on "75/85" and start merging over to your right as you get inside the city. Do not go ALL the way over to your right because those are exit lanes for Ga Tech. That's not where you're getting off. Go a little farther down and you'll see the signs for "Williams St" and the GA Aquarium. That's your exit. Get in the right exit only lane (its a double-lane exit). Then follow their directions for parking. I know exactly where the museum is, I just don't know where they tell you to park for it.

     HTH!!

Okay I was just nervous, because when I googled the directions for the museum, it said to take 85 South and then get off at exit 249C.  But when I looked up exit #'s for 85 in GA, I didn't see one listed for 249C.   When you get into GA from SC it starts at exit 100something and then the numbers get lower.

  • The exit number is a 75 exit number, not an 85 exit number. When you get off there will be several outside parking lots that say you can park for around $5. You can do that and walk to the museum. This will be the cheapest. There is an indoor lot across the street but I believe they were going to be closing this to the public soon, if not already (although maybe not on Sundays).

When you enter Georgia from SC, you're on I-85 at mile marker 179 or so. About 100 miles south of the state line (somewhere in the 80s mile markers), I-85 merges with I-75. This is called the Downtown Connector. On the Downtown Connector (I-75/85), the miles are marked with I-75 numbers. They go from 249 on the north end of the connector to 240 or so on the south end of the connector, then I-75 and I-85 split (to go to FL or AL, respectively) and go back to their own numbering systems. Does that make sense?
