I'm a loser, but this is what is exciting me today

My new gym membership!!  I may have mentioned this here before, but I used to be a big gym rat.  When HH and I first met, I was a member at five different gyms and I was in great shape.  I worked out every.single.day and I felt awesome.  But when I went back to school I was sooo busy and I had such a long commute that I had to stop all my different sports-related activities, and I cancelled my gym membership because I couldn't afford it.  And then I got flabby.

It has been two and a half years since I have had a gym membership.  I have gained about 20 lbs since I met HH.  That is a LOT of weight on a 5"4 frame.  My hubs is an avid gym-goer.  He is in fantastic shape.  He has been an athlete his whole life, so it just doesn't even occur to him to not work out, and he has the body to prove it.  So when we first met, we were a great match.  We worked out together, we both rocked our gym clothes...and now I am the odd one out.  I do NOT want people to start thinking that maybe we're not a good match for one another...even though he says that he doesn't care what I look like, and he still tells me I'm beautiful, I'm not comfortable with the way I'm looking naked anymore.

SO!  Gym membership!!  I went with him last night and signed up for a spouse membership on his account.  We worked out together and it was sooo good.  I'm really looking forward to going tonight.

Also, I got the book New Rules of Lifting For Women yesterday (it is all anyone on the H&F board talks about, so I picked it up).  I just started reading it, and it is AWESOME.  I am going to start doing the program tomorrow.  Today marks a new beginning in the getting in shape phase of my life!  I'm determined that by the time Christmas rolls around I will be able to see a difference in my body shape.

Sorry this was a long post, I'm just really really excited about this!!

  • One question... why would anyone need FIVE gym memberships?  Was this all at the same time??

I desperately need to start working out, but have ZERO motivation to do so.  You've seen Adam's pictures.  His body is sick.  He's got a freakin six pack while I'm working on my mini-keg over here.  I REALLY need to get in shape.  Plus, we've been talking about getting pregnant in like a year and there's no way that I want to get KTFU while being all flabby, because I know that there's no way I would be able to lose all the weight/flab after having a kid.  I'd rather get in shape now... continue to stay in shape while KTFU... and then pick up a good routine afterwards to lose the baby weight.

  • I really want to get in shape to. HH and I have talked about joining our local gym, but neither of us have time to go work out right now. I started a diet this week and have been doing ok on it. I've cheated a few times already and I need to stop. I've been doing 100-150 crunches one to two times a day and I'm constantly going up and down the stairs at our house so that counts as my leg workout. I don't work in a very good part of town or I'd go walk on my lunch hour. I just got on the scale a little while ago and I've gained 7.4 lbs since the wedding. I'd be happy just losing 5 of that so right now my goal is to lose that before the holidays.

  • Five gym memberships:

    1. I was a student, so had a free membership at the university gym, which was great because it has a huge pool.

    2. Paid for a membership at the same gym that Dave went to, which is a chain and an AWESOME gym, really clean and well maintained with decent classes - this is the same one that I renewed my membership to last night.

    3. I was still cheerleading at this point, so had a membership at the gymnastics center, which I did 2 or 3 times a week

    4. Worked at a yoga center, so had a free membership there as well, which was awesome because those are normally SUPER expensive, and this was the best center in the city

    5. Had a free membership at another locally owned gym.  It was just a tiny one, really elitist, haha - had the free membership because the owner wanted me to teach a few classes there and so I was working with him and getting the set-up of the classes organized.  I didn't use the gym for their equipment, but went to the classes that he taught a few times a week - to this day have never met a better gym instructor for HIGH intensity group workouts.  Unfortunately the gym folded a few months after...I was only there for maybe 5-6 months.  And never did get to teach any class (we were waiting for the new "term" to start before he added the class, and it folded before that)

So.  Five gyms.  And I attended every single one of them at least once a week.  It was nothing for me to go to two or even three of them in the same day.  (eg swim in the  morning at the university gym, do a yoga class at the center in the afternoon, then meet Dave at the club and do a workout in the evening)

Maaaaan I was in good shape then.  It is pretty shocking to think that someone who worked out that often was able to let themselves go to the degree that I did.  It was a slow progression, and I think I never expected it to get to the extent that it has.

I think you're a freak of nature... hahaha... It's just not natural to work out that much!!

  • Oh I totally lied!  It wasn't 5, it was 6!!

hahaha I forgot that I was also taking Pilates, Strip Tease, AND Pole Dancing classes at the Pilates Studio in town too!!!

    Go ahead, judge me.

Actually, I really really like working out.  I don't consider it "working out" I just consider it a fun hobby.  It's something to do.  I love the way it makes me feel, and even when I'm in there doing something tough, I am having a great time.  It's a social activity, really.  I have met a lot of good friends through the gym, I find it really friendly.

We even made friends with another couple at the gym just last night.  Manny and Angela.  hahaha  people just always randomly start talking to me when I'm at the gym.

  • I need to get better about working out, too. I've gained about 4 lbs since the wedding. Three of those were really recent and I'm hoping were a temporary fluctuation-- Matt says that he can't tell, and, to be honest, I can't either. That's what makes me think that it's water weight or something, because no way that I could miss a true 3-lb gain at my size.

I was going to run last night, and then my mother called. Stick out tongue I know; excuses. No excuses tonight!

  • I need to follow your lead. I've been wanting to join the gym that is literally 2 minutes from my house but I just haven't.

I went to put on jeans the other day that I haven't worn since April probably and they were horrible! I don't think I've gained any weight but I think it's redistributed...I don't want to go on our honeymoon looking gross!

  • I'm right there with you!  I worked out like a maniac all last year, leading up to the wedding.  Then the summer rolled around and I played volleyball and did a lot of outside activities so I didn't get to the gym as much.  Now that it's getting cooler, I'm back into it and L-O-V-E it!  I go during my lunch hour too which really helps cut down my stressful day.

Plus, my HH is a personal trainer and a high school football coach.  I have a ton of great information at my fingertips that people pay big bucks for so the least I can do is work out and use it.   You're not a loser!  I'm right there with you!

  • Holy crap I wish I had a ton of cool things like strip tease! I can't even find a good normal yoga studio by my house! The only one I can find is hot yoga, and while it is fun, I also feel like I'm going to die lol. I might start up again once I get some more money though, we'll see!  Right now I just have a weight machine and a treadmill in my garage, plus running outside :)

ETA New rules ROCKS I love love love that book. I have wanted a power rack for SO LONG!! I miss doing heavy squats. I can't lift enough over my head for a challenging squat :( hahaha.

  • I know Hayley, I wish they had cool stuff like that where I live now :(  It was a lot of fun doing those classes with some good friends...of course, now if I see anything at all resembling a pole (stop sign anyone?) when I've had a couple drinks, you'd swear I thought that I worked my way through college on the stage instead of just having taken a couple of classes...I am a huge embarrassment to myself.
