Actually *using* your garage

This is  a huge pet peeve of mine. Where we live (cough::SWOKC/Moore:::cough) it seems no one actually parks their vehicles in their garages. Instead, their garage is either full of boxes/furniture/junk, or they use it as a second living area with old couches, a fridge, and a TV.

I don't understand this?? I hate looking down a street and seeing 2-3 cars in the driveway when there are 2-3 car garages for every house. I think the front of a house looks so much more appealing without cars in the driveway.

I'm talking about nice neighborhoods. These are mostly new cars parked outside every day in the elements.

Am I missing something? Just being a snob? What's the point of a garage if you don't park your car in it?

Re: Actually *using* your garage

  • I was just commenting about this to DH the other day. When we drive through older/inexpensive neighborhoods we notice a LOT more cars in the street (and RVs and old cars in their lawns and boats...).

ETA: I just realized you said new neighborhood.... I don't notice it as much in newer neighborhoods. But, I don't think you're being a snob. I don't like looking down my street and seeing 15 cars in the road.

  • If you would come clean out my garage, I would gladly park my car in it.  Big Smile  Actually, H and I were just talking abou this last night, we need to clean ours out so I can park in it (I don't think there is room for both vehicles, but I could be wrong).

I do understand what you're saying though.  My aunt lives in a nice neighborhood, she has a two car garage and a single car garage and none of their vehicles are ever parked in them.

  • We feel exactly the same way. We have plenty stored in the garage but have plenty of room for two cars, too.

  • I've always parked my car in the garage, but H's truck is too big for even an over-sized garage.  (this is due to his profession, not some big country boy lift kit).  We're building a shop in the backyard to house his truck and all of our equipment, so eventually it'll be in a garage.

When we lived in Moore everyone on the street had their cars outside too.  I don't really get it...I do think it makes the neighborhood/area look less appealing.

  • This is one of my biggest pet peeves!  We are one of the only homes to actually use our garage as a place to park our cars. Our street looks like a car lot! I hate it. We have a very small garage, but we manage to keep a ping pong table and punching bag in there along with H's large truck and my car.  Every time I comment on the situation I feel like people think I'm a snob.

  • We have two cars, and one of them gets parked in the garage. The truck however does not, but that's because our garage is about 4 inches too short to fit the truck. Super Angry So, we have no choice but to keep it in the driveway.

  • We are in a newer neighborhood and we actually park our car in the garage but DH's truck stays in the driveway. Even if we had no other items stored in the garage his truck would still not fit. 1. it's way too big and 2. we have a storm shelter on the other side.

But I have noticed that we have neighbors who either have their cars parked on street or in their driveway. It doesn't really bother me too much. Just when their car blocks off the sidewalk and then I have to detour to the street.

Same here.  I'd probably end up driving the truck through our house trying to get it pulled in far enough.

  • Lol, I notice this too... only because one of the LEADING reasons we wanted a home was for a spacious garage. With that being said, we moved and had loads of boxes in our garage. I was fed up after less than 2 months, we moved the boxes and now park our cars in the garages exclusively. Since the weather here is so wacky I love to park in it without the fear of hail or strong winds (dirt).

  • I would love to be able to park my car in our garage, at least during the winter.  Sadly, the garage is FULL--tools, 4-wheeler, riding mower, weed eater, more tools, etc.
One of these days we'll finally be able to build DH's shop that he's always wanted and get the garage cleaned out!

We don't live in a neighborhood in the middle of town, but if we did it would annoy me to have cars parked all along the street.
Gotta ask though, if you actually use your garage where do you put all of your stuff??
  • My neighborhood isn't nice by any means...there are cars parked everywhere.  We have to park 1 in the street because we only have a 1 car garage, I leave before H, so he can't park his in the driveway....However, when our neighbors have their garage doors open, most of them are just filled with junk.  I can't wait to have a 2 car garage because it bothers me, too to have cars out front.

Since we only park one car in the garage we use the other half for tools, mowers, etc.   But we just have a push mower and almost everything else is organized on the walls.  I imagine with bigger mowers, 4-wheeler, etc you probably can't get all that in half a garage.

That's what I was thinking, just wanted to make sure I was being practical and not missing something.  I guess DH really does need a shop Smile
  • This is also a HUGE pet peeve of mine as well.  When I was in high school and my brother and I both had cars, we parked two cars in the garage (my mother's car and my car) and had two cars in the drive way (dad and brother).  Of course, playing musical cars every morning was a total pain in the @ss but my parents refused to allow us to park in the street - I get that.

Sadly, our neighbors at our old house did not get that and so they had two cars in their garage and two cars on the street - parked right in front of my house making it very difficult to get out of my driveway. What really irked is in when I would have friends come over, they would park in that area and my neighbors would leave me crappy notes as if they OWED that space.  I hit one of them one time and if you think I left them a note you are crazy.

We also had an issue here with my neighbor parking DIRECTLY in front of my house.  It was an old, sh!tty rusted car.  I complained, complained, complained and complained and finally threatened and he finally sold the car and now we don't have any issues.

The moral of the story is: I don't care if you drive a Ferrari and have it parked in front of your house. Put the car in the driveway.  And if you have too many cars for your driveway/garage, then consider kicking some people out!  Now obviously this is not directed at anyone other than the people that live near me!

  • I don't have a problem with cars not being in the garages at all. I guess it's because while growing up (and even now) my dad always worked in his garage. He had a couple of work benches in there and that's where he did all of his tinkering with vehicles, mowers, whatever. All his tools are in there, along with the deep freeze. It wasn't a place to park vehicles, it was a place to work - unless it was hailing... then we'd always have to go out and move things around to fit the vehicles in.

"Always have faith in God, yourself, and the Cowboys...'-Eddie Sutton

  • We park both cars in the garage.  I don't think ours is considered oversized but we can fit most everything in there.  Before DH built his "shed" we were able to keep all of the yard tools in there too...  I also have two large dog crates, a small chest freezer and a second fridge at the front of my garage.

I have a couple of neighbors who can't fit a single car in the garage and I hate it...  My biggest pet peeve though...  The sherriff that parks in the street facing the wrong way.  I really wish I could give him a ticket.  ;)

  • We don't park in the garage very often. We only have one vehicle and a two car garage, but our garage is the kind where it's two individual doors (there's the seperator thingy in the middle) and our truck barely fits (we have to fold the mirrors in so they don't hit the seperator). It's just a pain to pull it in.

I don't mind people parking in their driveways, I think people parking in the street gets pretty annoying. We live in a not nice but not trashy neighborhood (although there are a few trashy houses every now and then). Everyone parks in the street and it just looks trashy IMO. But, I understand that sometimes, it's most convenient to park in the street. Growing up, my dad had a really nice truck, then a little not-so-nice truck he'd use just to drive to work, my mom's car, my car, my brother's nice, fixed up 1970 cutlass, and my brother's not-so-nice car that he used to drive around (since his cutlass got about 9 miles/gallon). So we always had a couple cars parked in the street. But a lot of the people in my neighborhood like parking in the street facing the wrong direction. Not sure why, but that drives me crazy!

Okay, what IS it with Moore and cars parking the wrong way on the street? Crazytown.

Idk, but I wish a cop would come through our neighborhood and give them all tickets...

  • In our old house the garage was too skinny for either of us to fit our cars in so we parked under the carport.  When we bought the house we are in now, H was so excited that we could park both cars in the garage, but then we got a 3rd car so it was in the garage and we both parked outside (so we wouldn't have to play musical cars in the morning).

Just within maybe the last year we  have enough room in the garage to park both cars inside but then this weekend H was working on the house and only his car fits in now.  I hate parking outside, but his car is "nicer" so he wants it in.  In our next house I want a 3-4 car garage so there is no reason we can't fit both cars inside.
