Garbage disposal question

Can I put a banana peel in it? I'm a newbie to this fancy contraption.

Re: Garbage disposal question

  • Yes.  our builder said we could put anything in there except bacon fat.
  • I'm of the mindset that just because you can doesn't mean you should, in this case.

  • yep!  I try to put all organic stuffs down there to cut down on our garbage and smell.

my favorite thing to grind is lemon wedges/peels.  smells so good.

  • I wouldn't do a banana peel because it could be a little fibrous.  But, I pour bacon fat down there so what do I know?
  • I wouldn't recommend rose stems either. Confused

  • hmm, I've done rose stems.  seems my garbage disposal can kick Bethie's garbage disposal's ass.  : )

I actually installed it myself.  Ours broke a year or so after we moved in (it was 6-8 years old, so debatable if I killed it or not by stuffing such things as banana peels and rose stems down it) and we picked up a pretty decently powerful one.

  • Kay, the bacon fat may have something to do with our septic system rather than the disposal.  Other than that and chicken/steak bones we put all our food leftovers in the disposal.

Once a month we use that disposal foam cleaner.

  • I wouldn't recommend a 48 oz. container of coleslaw either.
  • I thought it was bad to put all that food down your disposal?  We no longer have a disposal, but we've started composting so all the stuff I would have put down the disposal now goes in the compost heap.

I thought that's what it was for.   This is my first disposal but anyone I know who has one uses it for food that would normally get thrown out.

  • I sort of feel like I'm back in the pon flushing discussion.
    image
  • if I had a compost heap, I'd put the food there.  it's something I've thought about doing for a while.

  • I want to do a compost heap as well.  My parents have one at our beach house, and the neighbors all throw their stuff on it as well.  It's enormous.
  • I wouldn't do a banana peel, too fibrous. You also shouldn't do potato peels. Think of things that can have "threads" and wrap around/gum up the works.

Lemons, oranges, eggshells, and ice cubes down there keep things in good working order, though.

  • I DO NOT reccomend Potato peels.

  • Yeah, don't put all the potato peels down the garbage disposal when you're making mashed potatoes for 15 people.

  • Makes Thanksgiving that much more exciting, doesn't in.

If you don't/didn't put food down there, what did you use it for?

  • I meant that I didn't think you were supposed to just be shoving all your food scraps down the drain like that.  We used ours here and there for things like egg shells, coffee grounds, etc.  But I never considered putting bigger things like banana peels and stuff in mine.
I never had a disposal growing up, so I'm probably just not well versed in how to use them.

  • I would give up my dishwasher to have a disposal again. No joke.

  • I never put anything in my garbage disposal. My dad would kill me if I did. He is a plumber and always told me not to put anything down there. A few spoons have made it in there without my knowledge though. They made it out just a little scratched.

The bacon grease, or any grease/oil, is because it will clog your drain once it solidifies.

  • Do not put your hand in it. Or carrot peels.

  • I don't really put anything in it.  I dump food in the trash (going to compost one of these days), but then I use the disposal to chop up the remnants that get rinsed off.  It just keeps me from having to scrape.  My dad's good friend is a plumber and he was fixing disposals all the time because people put anything and everything down there.

Pon related: my BIL and SIL, their first house had plumbing issues when they moved in, so they had someone come clear the blockage and it was full of used tampons.  FYI!
