MI Dept of Health Licensing Board- VENT!!

<sigh>  I moved from Kansas City to Grand Rapids 3 weeks ago and was suppose to start at Spectrum on Aug. 30th.  But my nursing license has not been endorsed by the Michigan licensing board, yet!!!  HR will not let me start without a MI license because the job description reads that an MI license is a requirement.  This, even though my job does not involve direct patient care and I have a nursing license in good standing from another state.

They told me that it could take up to 6-8 weeks for the board to process my application and I started calling at 6 weeks.  It's now been 9 weeks and I keep getting the same line that they are so swamped with all the new grad applications and behind.

So, here I sit- not employed and waiting anxiously while the moving expenses and bills pile up- not a good feeling!  The first week I tried to be relaxed about it- I read a few books, ran, explored the area- but now I am getting nervous!

Does anyone have connections at the Michigan Board of Health Licensing Board??  I have pleaded with Spectrum HR to let me start with the license pending, so far they are not budging.  It just seems like I am caught in the red tape of the job description and the board because I can provide all the same documentation sent to the board to Spectrum and they can verify I am a nurse in good standing. Has anyone else gone through this process?  Any advice?

  • That is unfortunate, I wish I had advice for you.  My experience with the licensing board has been smooth, but I have always been in the state of MI.

I hope it happens soon so you can start work!

  • I don't have advice but just wanted to say that sucks.  I'm sorry :(  I totally know how that feels.  I'm Canadian so after DH and I got married I had to live in Ontario and wait for my visa paperwork to be approved before I could move here to live with him (even though I was previously living here on a student visa).  I took 15 months.  So I can totally relate to the frustration about 'red tape.'

Sounds like you are doing everything you can do in the meantime.   Keep putting the pressure on until it gets resolved!  GL.

  • How frustrating! I don't have any advice, but I'm sorry you're dealing with this. Hopefully your MI license comes through soon.
  • No advice, but I'm sorry you are dealing with this. I am also a KS transplant. I'm from Pittsburg, about 3 hours from KC. Welcome to MI :)

  • I only have connections with DHS but I just wanted to say to keep on top of everything.  Make sure you document each call to them.  When I got my daycare license I was told that it could take days after I sent in my paperwork up to a month to get my license in the mail.  All depends on how backed up they are...and from the sounds of it you are experiencing the latter.  Good luck.

Can you find a temp job for now to help with moving expenses?

  • That is awful!  I would be very upset, too.  You're going to be in labor and delivery, right?  Could you ask your future supervisor for advice or assistance?  There has to be something you can do!  That is just unacceptable.  Have you tried asking to speak to the supervisor of the person answering the phones at the board?  I wish I had better advice!  Where do you end up finding a place to rent?
