baby-safe cleaning?

I just received a hand-me-down crib from my in-laws and want to clean it up.  This is going to be our first child and I'm not sure what is safe to use.  My brother-in-law told me not to use chlorox wipes or anything and just use vinegar.  Wouldn't one of those "green" cleaners be okay?  The vinegar smell is a bit much to handle.

  • I would think any multi purpose cleaner would be fine and if your really worried: after cleaning the crib, wipe it down with just a rag and water.

  • If you go the vinegar route, you can make a vinegar/water mixture.  You can use more water than vinegar and it'll clean up just fine, without the vinegary smell.  Vinegar, water, and baking soda are all we use around the house these days.  Or yes, you can use a "green" cleaner, but nothing's greener than vinegar, plus you'll get more bang for your buck using it.
  • you can also use one of those steam cleaner things if anyone you know has one.
  • I use vinegar as our cleaning solution at home. The smell goes away and does not last. I usually use half vinegar and half water solution. I use it to clean pretty much everything.
