What do you know about personality tests?

I always cringe when I have to take one.  I never know what the heck they want.  I *know* you can't skew the results, but I just get caught up between choosing, "the answer I want to choose" vs. "the answer I think they think I should choose."  I have to take one for an upcoming interview and I'm just going to throw caution to the wind and answer honestly - which I know it what I should be doing anyway.

So, any insight into these tests?  What are they looking for?  I'm not a homicidal maniac, so I think I'm pretty safe on that front.

  • I've had to take these a few times.  At least one employer was looking for the right fit with other employees as well as the job itself.

  • They test your personality--that's about as much as I know about them.

However, I *think* they're just trying to make sure you're not a maniac, and can work in the type of environment they have to offer.  More so, I think they base a large portion of their opinion on the actual contact/interaction with the person.

GL however, and I'm sure you'll do fine!

  • I have such a problem w/ these tests being used in the interview process, specifically because of what peopel are saying - they are used to see if you'll be a good fit.

I'm certified to train on the MBTI.  All this assessment does is show your preferences but it doesn't mean you'll be good and one thing vs another.  My type is VERY rare in the training field, and actually many w/ my temperament don't even go to college.

But yet, I like what I do and I think I'm good at it.  If I had been passed over for a job based on my type, I'd be IRATE.

  • ECB, that's my issue with taking the tests as well.  All I can do is answer honestly and see what comes of it.

If I ever interview w/ a company that wants me to take the assessment, I'll be pushing back on them over it- asking how exactly they use this information and *I* personally dont' feel it's necessarily a good indicator of how well a person will do in a job.  I'm living proof of how type doesn't always play a role in success.

  • Some, like Myers-Briggs, test your innate personality. Others test your personality in a work situation. I worked for a company that was *all* about personality tests, so I took a host of them depending on the whims of the CEO.

Quite honestly, I think they're a load as part of an employment screening process. Most people try to answer them the way they think the company wants them to, which isn't typically an honest gauge of their personality. And I've rarely worked in a situation where my personality was so important to whether or not I succeeded.

I always answered honestly and let the chips fall where they may.
