math classes ? about going back to school

I have my K-6 certification but have not been able to find a teaching job.  I was always good at math and enjoyed teaching it, so decided to go back and get a cross-endorsement in middle school math.

I have been out of high school since 1993, so it's been a long time since I did any math!  I just started a precalculus class this week, and was feeling a bit overwhelmed since all the other students are straight out of HS.

Some of the concepts are coming back to me, but I am wondering if I am in too deep.  Should I go back a step to Algebra maybe?

Just looking for suggestions, I know none of you can obviously know my exact level or situation.  WWYD??

Thanks

  • Do you feel overwhelmed like there's no way you can see yourself keeping up?  Do you think that if you had just a little more "refreshers" you'd get back in the grove?

If it's the latter, there's plenty of things you can do online, and test books you can pick up to do some practice.

  • FI took a calculus course four years after college and struggled because he was lacking a strong foundation in Alegbra.  He continued to struggle with the simple Alegbra stuff through calculus III!  I would recommend taking a refresher Alegbra course or buying a book to self study before you get in too deep.  Plus, at the middle school level you might have to teach Alegbra so it will be important for you to have a good understanding.

  • I'm currently working on my masters in Middle School Math Education.  I went to college for Elementary Ed. and taught 5th grade for 5 years.  What classes do you need take?  My first class was math methods class for middle school teachers and it covered just about everything.  I think it was a good way to get my feet wet and bring back all those things I learned back in HS and haven't used since.  I haven't taken calculus yet, I think I have it next fall, but the one I need is calc. concepts for middle school teachers and I've heard from others in my program that it isn't bad.  FWIW I never took Calc in high school and I only took 2 semesters of college algebra in my undergrad because it was all I needed for a Elem. Ed. degree- I also had no intention back then of teaching middle school math.
  • Can you talk to your professor? Maybe they have some review resources for you. Perhaps even some online tools.
  • What about getting a tutor? That would cost less than taking an entire extra course.  You can also buy a high school level pre-calc review book to help refresh you - I don't know where you live, but in NY they'd be the Barron's Regents Review Books - the blue ones explain a lot.
