All you crazy runners...

Let me preface this with:  I am NOT a runner.  :)

DH signed up for a 5k to support a local animal charity and thinks I should sign up to run as well.  As much as I dislike running, I've been thinking of doing a 5k for a while now... kind of a "face your fears" type of thing.  Plus, maybea goal like this will help me get in shape.

Anyway, the race is November 14th which is just over 2 months away.  Is this enough time for an out-of-shape, beginning runner to train?  I'm not really concerned with time, just getting it done.  I know it's only a little over 3 miles, but I usually call it quits after one mile...

I know we've got some runners here so I'd love any advice, tips, or just moral support in general!  Thanks!

Re: All you crazy runners...

  • Yes. Do the Couch to 5K program (c25k). It's a 10 week program that has you do walk/run intervals 3 times a week, each week gradually increasing your running time, by the last week you'll be able to run for 30 minutes straight. Totally doable. If you have an iphone or itouch, download the C25K program. I think it's $2.99 or something but it's totally worth it. It will take you through the whole program, day by day, it tells you when to walk and when to run and it lets you listen to your own music. I love it.
  • Totally do it! You will feel such an amazing sense of accomplishment when you cross the finish line. One of my BFFs never ran until this year, wasn't athletic at all and now she is training to run the Chicago Marathon in a month. I am so proud of her and have seen all the progress she has made these last few months. I know you can do it!!
  • You should sign up...like pp said-just listen to your body and be kind to yourself.  the c25k is a great program to train with.  The most important thing is to stick with the schedule you map out each week- even if you have to do a run/walk combo.  And it always helps me to workout the same time everyday-for some reason I feel more accountable.  Let me know if you need anything and good luck!

  • 2 months is definitely enough time to train for a 5K - and you might even end up liking it and wanting to do more :)
  • I just want to butt in and say I have a lot of admiration for runners, it takes a lot of determination, and discipline.  I've thought about it once and a while to try it, but I definately don't have the discipline, so I look up to your runners...

  • Thanks ladies!

I'm really starting to look forward to this, and I have just enough time to do the C25K program and get my butt in shape.  :)  I'll definitely be paging some of you when I need advice or want to give up.  Thanks for all the words of advice and encouragement!

  • Good luck! I finished the C25K program and ran my first 5K in June, it definitely is a great program. My sister did it as well and we are running a 5K next weekend (her first). I can forward you some C25K podcast info if you're interested.
