those who went to Mexico...
for their honeymoon, specifically Riviera Maya. Where did you stay?
We're staying at The Royal in Playa Del Carmen next month and just wanted to get some rec's for places to see, things you did and loved, or any excursions you went on.
Thanks!

Re: those who went to Mexico...
We didn't go there for our honeymoon, but I have been to Playa before. Last time I stayed at the Gran Porto Real (right next door), we've also stayed in Playacar, both in the hotels and private condos.
Definitely wander down 5th Ave (shopping district). It's neat. Don't go early in the day though, nothing is open. Actually, my favourite time of day to go is sunset-ish, and stare at the little church on 5th Ave. Lots of good places to eat, depends on what you are looking for.
Excursion wise, there is lots to do. Xelha and Xcaret are both fun, and very busy days. If you want to snorkel at a reef, or if you are in to ruins, but don't want to go too far, do Tulum. Chichen Itza is very cool, and most tours to tehre also include cenote swimming, but it it quite a drive. Totally worth it I think, but it depends on what you are in to. Last time we also went ziplining at Selvetica, which was pretty neat. Oh! And you can also do Cozumel, very pretty, worth a day.
Have fun!
Parasailing. The Royal is just to the right of the boardwalk at the top of the photo.

We stayed at Grand Velas resorts and spa in Riviera Maya and we loved it, the beaches were beautiful!! We heard from so many people that the shops and nightlife in Playa del Carmen is great, though. Have fun!!
Unfortunately I don't have many recommendations since we only went off resort once but, we did go to Dolphin Discovery in Riviera Maya...we did a day trip there where a bus picked us up and we also had lunch after swimming with the dolphins, it was amazing!! If you do go there, I will just warn you that they charge a ridiculous amount for the pictures that they give you and the dvd, while not allowing you to bring your own camera. For us, it was worth it because we know we'll never have that chance again.
We didn't go for our honeymoon but we went a few years ago and stayed at the Riu Playacar.
We did 2 off-resort days. One was to Xcaret. I liked it. We wanted to swim with the dolphins there, but the weather was wrong or something and they didn't have it available. The other was a Tulum Extreme ziplining, snorkeling, and going to Tulum combo. It was probably my favorite day. I'd highly recommend it.
You most likely don't have to schedule your excursions before hand. I think the companies will come to your resort and you can decide what you want to do once you get there.
We stayed in the Villas at the Grand Sunset Princess Resort (15 mins up the beach from Playa del Carmen). We loved our private villa!!!!
But in regards to things to do in the area
1. Do barter on 5th ave, go in the afternoon when the sellers are more eager to bargain
2. Check out Alltournative Tours (in the area), we did a one day excursion which included a)hike through Mayan rainforest, b)lunch and blessing ritual in Mayan village, c)ziplining, d)rapelling down into a water filled cave, e) kayaking, f)tour of the ruins of Tulum (the only ancient ruins site in Mexico that you are still allowed to climb up). The whole thing cost $119 US and was well worth it!
3. Enjoy some "quiet" nights in with your new hubby !!!!
Hope this helped! Let us know how you enjoyed your trip and what you did
We stayed at the Valentin Imperial in Playa Del Carmen. We did 2 different excurisions.
1.The four wheeling through the jungle with a cenote tour.
It was fun however the ride there was totally sketchy, aka my hubby looked at me and said you know they could kill us out here and no one would ever know. It was literally a dirt road with big boulders in the middle that the tour guide would have to drive practically into the jungle to avoid the boulders. The four wheeling itself was a blast and swimming in the cave was fun but "refreshing" aka freaking cold!!!
2. The Mayan Adventure. It consisted of snorkeling, a cenote, and a platform jump/zip line.
The snorkleing was fabulous. We saw so many fish and even sea turtles. Our tour guide said the day before they saw 3 mantatees. The cenote was much bigger, more open, and bright but none the less "refreshing". The zip line and high jump was fun.
We also went to downtown playa del carmen to 5th avenue which I would highly recomend. It was soooo much fun to experience the culture. I would definitely recommend keeping small amounts of money in different pockets though. We went to thr first store and they wanted $118 for a bone elephant and silver ring. We bartered down to $40 and he said ok however when my husband took his money out of his pocket that pocket only had $35 and the store owner accepted. However if we would have had all the money we brought in his pocket the guy would not have accepted after bartering down almost $100.
Have fun!
We stayed at Secrets Maroma. It was beautiful. We only did one excursion. We went to Chichen Itza using cancun line. I don't recommend it however because it takes 12 hours. MUCH too long of a day in my opinion and most of it is in a bus. I do however suggest xcaret and tulum. They are much closer and have may more activities available. If you want to see Mayan ruins and going to Chichen Itza isn't important to you, just do Tulum. It is on a cliff and from what I've seen and heard, its amazing.
Have a blast!
PS BRing LOTS of sunscreen. Make sure to apply ever hour or so so you don't burn. ALso, if you can find a good sunscreen for your face/forehead, i really suggest bringing that!
