Packing for a move - quickly

I'm such a procrastinator!! We are moving next wednesday and I literally have not even started packing!! Granted, my husband and I are currently living in a furnished corporate lease apartment, so we don't have tons of furniture to move (mostly clothes, kitchen stuff, etc.)

What are some good tips to get through things quickly and keep motivated?? Besides my swiftly approaching deadline of course hah.

Re: Packing for a move - quickly

  • If you don't have time to organize boxes and have to throw random stuff in boxes (ie kitchen with bathroom stuff), I always label them so when I get to the new place, I only have to read the "labels" to find what I'm looking for instead of opening every box.

  • Great ideas - thanks y'all! I will definitely label and make sure that I have easy access to the things we'll be needing most when we arrive.

    Keep the suggestions coming!

  • We may be a little anal but every box's general contents were given a number.  Nothing crazy detailed for descriptions.. pans, desk supplies, etc. The number was on a couple sides of each box (so if it was turned the wrong way you could still see the number).  The contents and number were logged in a spreadsheet.  Now, whenever we need to find something that is still boxed we can do a quick 'find' on the spreadsheet and voila!  item is quickly located.  Best packing decision ever!
  • Oh and for things you are unpacking fairly quickly.. you can use clothes as padding .. sweatshirts make great padding for breakable :)
  • I've been there, Done that! It stinks being the procrastinating type!!

Staying motivated is tough! Here's what I always do, I pick an upbeat playlist on my ipod plug in the headphones and tackle one room at a time, leaving (Usually) the bathroom for last. Grab a sharpie (for labeling) and a few boxes, plug in the tunes and work work work!! When you finish one room, stop for a few, Grab a drink and a snack (reward yourself) and move on to the next . . If you can enlist anyone else, Do It!! That can sometimes help you stay on track if you see them working away. . .

    Good Luck!!

This is what we do, too.  We've moved quite a bit in the last 2 or 3 years, and this has been a lifesaver when it comes to unpacking (/finding stuff before we've fully unpacked, as I am the procrastinating type on the unpacking end).
  • We just went through this a month ago, didn't pack until the day before our move... it worked out, though.

We just packed the breakables, threw everything else in boxes haphazardly or into trash bags.

    GL!

  • Great tips! I've got my music blaring and sharpies/tape in hand:)

MrsJetSet- great idea to use clothing as padding for breakables - genius!! Never would have thought of that.

I'm not sure I've got the time to make a list of everything in each box but I'll work on labeling clearly so I'll know what's where.

    Thanks!

  • Pack a suitcase with clothes and toiletries to get you through to next Friday.

Now you can pack everything else. Eat take out or frozen heat and serve food.

And if you don't have it done by Sunday night, Monday you call the moving company and hire packers to come do it all on Tuesday.

  • i definitely second some of the other comments - use clothes and other soft items as padding for breakable things. it is a hug space saver (you really don't need any bubble wrap!). also, fill your shoes with things. there is a lot of space in there that usually gets wasted. labeling boxes is of course important. i also make sure to mark/remember which way is "up" (maybe i'm just clumsy, but i once opened a box on the wrong side and all my amazing packing came spilling out and i even broke some things.)
  • this may sound REALLY ridicoulous but i put on EVERY SINGLE box the room the box goes into. and on every box i put 5 labels on it (one for each side and on the top) This way your not constantly looking for a label or have one fall off.

also my husband and i are building our first house so i have been buying furniture as it goes on sale and keeping it in storage (my mothers house lol) so i also made furniture layouts for each room (even where mirrors and paintings go on walls) so my husband isnt asking me 100 questions on where stuff go and the people who help us move can start putting furniture together and know where it goes and feel they are being really productive and helpful. I know this wont really work for everyone but it helps me since my hsuband hasnt really been around since he has been building our house and we didnt live together before we got married  so he really has NO idea where anything will go. ive been trying to keep him updated as much as possible but he really doesnt care lol....thats why i love him. i have full control of decor and furniture.

  • Agree with taking it one room at a time and listen to upbeat music,

I like the idea of packing your clothes and bathroom items for the week in a suitcase and packing everything else.
