a friend of mine posted this on facebook, i thought it was interesting.
discuss!
two positions:
1- burning korans
2- assuming that burning korans will incite muslims to engage in reactionary violence americans, christians, westerners, etc.
discussion:
a- which is more bigoted? 1 or 2?
b- is 2 bigoted if the assumption ends up true?
c- if the assumption ends up being true, which should be of greater concern: the bigotry of 1 or the reactionary violence of 2?
aaaand i'd like to add - if the nutball pastor goes tries to go through with this, do you think he'll succeed? i don't think the general public will allow it. there are some real wackos out there, and they love to target nutballs.
Re: burning korans
IMHO:
a- 1. If the situation was reversed, there'd be WAY more hell raised.
b- I don't think so,because I don't think the world would be surprised if there IS an outcry. Its like a bully picking on a kid. Some day, the kid is going to get really pissed off like Ralphie in A Christmas Story and go apesh!t.
c- Ehh.. that's a tough call. Maybe the bigotry, because of the snowball effect. If one gets away with it, will more do it? And what result do they expect? A parade?
d. I think he'd be successful if he doesn't make a public showing of it. I agree that the general public looooves nutjobs. Either way, I think the ones who partake in it would suffer some kind of backlash.
Here are my thoughts:
1. I think burning any type of religious work is hateful. If you don't believe it, don't read it.
2. I think that some racidals WILL react. However, I think assuming "muslims" in general will react violently is ignorent. I'm afraid that this is what many people will think is happening if (when?) those few radicals do.
a. Which is more bigoted? Who knows...not me. I think they're both ignorant actions.
b. See my #2. Every muslim out there will not have a violent reaction. If some do, they do. (I had an example here but I'm afraid of what you guys will say if I post it.) Just because a few people make an assumption true doesn't mean it was right of someone to make it.
3. Our concern should be the number of people, in our communities, in this day and age who harbor so much hatred/fear/ discomfort of those who are different.
This stuff makes me so sad and disappointed in those involved.
i agree. nutjob preacher burning the koran will attract nutjob muslims who will react with violence. crazy loves crazy.
Nicely put!
:-)
For reals! What I want to know is - why on EARTH are they giving this guy so much airtime? I've been tuned into CNN all morning and its fire/burning book/fire coverage. Sigh.
Pretty much what Jess O, gynnetex, and Orange Felt said.
As for which is more bigoted, there is no such thing as "more bigoted." Bigoted is bigoted. It doesn't matter if one way of expressing it is more or less harmful than another; it's bad all around.
this to a T.
if the pastor does go through with it, I'm a little scared at the possible repercussions. I've heard most embassies are on high-alert and other crazy precautions the government is having to make.
I cannot believe how much hatred is out there for other religions, particularly islam. FFS, not all terrorists are muslim. I'm talking to you, timothy mcveigh.
The end.
Well, not really. I wish for just one second that folks would get it through their head that Muslim =/= extremist. Muslim extremist = extremist just like this Crazy Pants Christian = extremist.
What are you trying to say? Any Christians that wear pants are extremist? What next? Are you going to start preaching about Pants burning?! Well, aren't you all holier than thou.
Ditto.
But just want to add: When the CIA Director and top US commander of the war in Afghanistan say it's a dumb idea, then the crazies should probably listen.
And...
Well, on one hand, it's important that people know the crazies like this are out there. But on the other hand, the media (in general) has been so completely irresponsible in their coverage of this and the Islamic community center. It's like a circus that just keeps fueling the fires of hate, under the pretense of inciting informed debate.
Sigh, indeed.
