SpceCadet

Just a quick question.  Your siggy says you are TTC and took Metformin.  I was on that as a high glucose drug....does it do something for TTC or did you take it for high blood sugar too?  JW.....I am interested in the way they use Metformin.  I had read so many off label uses while I was on it.  Just curious.

Re: SpceCadet

  • (long, sorry...)

I was diagnosed with PCOS a zillion years ago.  Many (some claim most) women who have PCOS have insulin resistance and Metformin can help lower blood sugar, helping with the hormone control balance of insulin and others.  I am not insulin resistant and pass the fasting glucose and 3-hour glucose tests with flying colors and have done so for years.

I have almost never have a period without taking something to induce a flow.  My endocrinologist felt that taking the metformin would/could help balance my various hormone levels by taking my body's insulin hormones down and possibly help create the other hormones it isn't balancing well.  If it worked alone, I would have a regular 28-32 day cycle.  Unfortunately, it didn't work as well as hoped for me.  Also, with PCOS, I run a higher risk of early miscarriage and early studies suggest that taking metformin through the first trimester brings the risks down to the normal level.

Women with PCOS are about 85% more likely to become type 2 diabetic within 10 years of diagnosis.  I'm at 13 or so years since diagnosis and thankful that I haven't developed diabetes. This is why many doctors will prescribe metformin for ladies with or without insulin resistance early on in their treatment.

  • Oh wow.  Didn't know any of that (PCOS glucose connection, risk lowering levels).  Thanks for the explanation.
