So, yesterday I almost met my maker! I was in traffic on my way home and was eating my favorite candy, Gobstoppers, and started choking on my own spit! Not like "cough cough, whew, swallowed a little spit" but like COUGH, GASP, GASP..." this when on for a good 3 minutes.
Y'all. I seriously thought I was going to die. I kept trying to get it clear by swallowing and tried to stay calm but it wasn't working. Once I thought I got it clear I would cough and it would start up again, painful painful GASPS. I'm in bumper to bumper traffic with NO shoulder b/c of construction. I was FUHREAKING out. I started thinking about how I would be the medical emergency that screws up I-95 south traffic on a Thursday! I didn't know what to do. I also thought that I might suffer brain damage since my brain wouldn't be getting oxygen. I TOLD you I was FREAKING!?
So finally, thank God, I got it clear, could cough, drink some water, and stop gasping. 10 minutes later I was still shaking.?
Nick says I could have stopped the car and gotten out and done the international sign for choking since we were all sitting still pretty much.?
So, LONG story no one probably cares about but since we're slow I thought I'd share.?
Any near death stories??
Re: Lucky to be here!!
I have totally done similar, it is scary as he!! but so darn hard to explain no matter how much you try to explain the panic you just can't.
So glad you are okay.
No near death experiences lately but two weeks ago after completely noticing it and telling myself to be careful while trimming one of our hedges I went right through our internet and phone cable. Luckily comcast was out within a few hours but when they got there I totally let them believe it was some landscapers fault.
Oh my gosh!!!! That is so scary!!!!!!! I'm glad you didn't meet your maker. I would be so sad
That Willy Wonka guy is sneaky. He makes those dangerous candies.
OMG! I'm glad you're OK.
No near death stories here, except car accidents that almost happened.
YES! I feel like Nick did not understand my panic as much as he should have!?
LOL, that's freaking HILARIOUS that you let Comcast believe it was a landscapers fault!!! LOL Pooks!!
My only near-death was about 1-1/2 years ago when DH and I hit a concrete wall head on at 60mph on I-95 South in NH after we hit some black ice. We should not have walked away with only bumps and bruises. Even the EMTs were surprised. They said when they saw the truck and knew they had serious injuries and possibly a fatality. The headlights were sitting on top of the tires (the highest point of the tires), the side panels above the tires were pushed back so we had to use out legs to force the doors open, all fluids in the engine were pouring out and smoking, and the bed of the truck had twisted slighly upwards from bouncing off the wall. We hit the wall 2 or 3 times because we were fishtailing really bad before the truck stopped in the first lane of traffic facing traffic. The 6 foot long black mark we left of the wall is still there. We drove by it this past weekend on the way home from Maine and DH said "Wow, that's where we should've died."
Were you alone in the car or with Campbell?
Wow that is scary, glad your ok.
Only near death would be my car accident in 2003, I had taken my seat belt off to reach behind and get my CD's while in dead stop traffic. Than traffice started moving, and stupid me didn't put it back on.
Got on the major Highway, doing about 75 in the fastlane when I hit a patch of glare from the sun, hitting my brakes cause I could see nothing, I came out of it and traffice had come to a standstill again.. and I.. doing 68 mph ( that image of my dashboard burned into my brain) tried my best to advoid the lady in front of me, who saw me coming and turned the same way I did so I ended up slamming into her from the middle of the car to the passenger seat.
On impact I broke the windsheld with my head, broke 3 ribs, & broken nose and alot of bruises.
The cop said the only thing that saved my life was the fact I sit so close to the steering wheel that my body slammed in it instead of the full force throwing me out of the windshield.
Also because I hit 2 of the 3 sensors so the airbags never went off.
Lucky to be alive and I always wear my seatbelt now.
That must have been sooooo scary!!! I'm glad you're still here with us!

Yes! This was my other thought! I'm going to die and they're going to have to report it was because I was eating a Gobstopper! And all my friends will say, "ah, that was her favorite candy, so so sad..."
OMG Summer I'm glad you are ok! No near death experiences for me.
And Pooks I would have done that same thing!
I was alone, just inching along, listening to my book on tape! ?I don't even know what I would have done if Campbell had been in the car.?
Shelley, I totally remember that story, that's just crazy! I would have said the same thing as your H when I drove by it too.
Then there was the time my friends stepdad put a machine gun in my face. I still don't know if it was loaded. He pulled a knife on me another time. He was drunk, high, and totally PTSD from Vietnam. After he realized what he did he cried for days and apologized to me for weeks after each event. To this day he avoids me because he feels so bad. I wasn't scared either time. I calmly pushed the gun and knife away and yelled at him. he also told his pitpull one day to "siccum". I was scared as can be when I saw the dog charging at me while I was sitting on the couch. The dog charged me, jumped on the couch, curled up on my lap, and went to sleep.
I had a friend throw a pair of surgical scissors across his room and they almost caught me in the neck. He threw them hard because then went far into the wooden door.
Did you pee your pants? Because I'm pretty sure I would have here and in Shelley's stories too.?
Surprisingly, none of the incidents caused me to even feel like I was going to pee myself.
I've spun out on the highway too. That's scary. I did it in rush hour traffic and somehow managed to miss every car in my path and stopped in the grass median.
Oh my gosh guys, these stories are not fun!
There was the time in 5th grade when on our way to the catskills I was riding with my grandparents and uncle on the NY Thruway. An 18 wheeler hit the back of us as we were driving and we spun from the right lane to the left shoulder and thankfully didn't hit any other cars. The truck driver kept going and a good samaritan finally flagged him down. It was labor day weekend and my parents were in their car with my sister and just a cluster.
Then there was the time non-car related that I got stuck under one of the dinghy sailboats I raced in high school. It was so windy that we capsized and the boat turtled upside down and I got stuck underneath. Everything I grabbed was loose lines until I finally got ahold of one of the mast stays and could get out that way. I thought I was going to drown.

wow, so scary! I am glad that you are alright!
My story is that I electrocuted myself when I was two. I stuck tweezers into an electrical outlet. I was burned pretty badly and have had some heart problems since.
omg, Lissy! That's scary! We were just at the doc today and she reminded us to start baby-proofing. I've had outlet covers in my amazon cart for a while to remind myself to buy them!?
Ugh, I know. I feel bad but I had to share and it's good to remind ourselves that we should be happy to be here!
