ewwwww roaches!

I just moved to the south and I guess roaches are pretty common. I saw a few outside at dusk and called for the exterminator to come. He sprayed all the window sills, doorways, under the sinks and in between/behind appliances. I thought he was thorough. That was nearly 2 weeks ago and I have found a few dead roaches around (4 total). But just a few minutes ago I was sitting on the couch and I felt something on my arm- it was a roach! I almost died. I vacuumed it up and then dumped it outside and squashed it. I will get the bug guy here again on Tuesday, but is there anything else I can do to deter them until then? Any spices that they don't like? Needs to be pet friendly if it is something the dog could consume.

Re: ewwwww roaches!

  • I don't think it's a sign the extermination didn't work as intended. Roaches live in nests and when you see one or two it's pretty certain that there's a whole lot in that nest you don't see. Extermination depends on the roaches coming in contact with the chemicals, which they may not all right away.

One thing we've found to be very fast and effective as Combat roach gel. It comes in a big syringe you can get at any big box store or your local grocery. You wouldn't want to put it out in the open where pup could get to it, but instead along the inside back of the sink cabinet, outside along the foundation here and there. The roach takes some back to the nest, eats, dies, gets eaten, and so on. Getting the nest is the real trick to getting rid of them long term.

In the meantime, keep all food sealed. Get rid of boxes as much as possible, even cereal boxes if you can. They love the adhesive and can live on it for the long haul. Oh, and welcome to the south ;)

  • Hi!  I live outside NYC and I feel your pain... we don't have roaches now - but two of my past apartments did... I also managed a cafe in a very nice building that had a huge problem with them.

Here are some things I learned...

    1. You may have to exterminate twice a week to really get rid of them in your home.  Make sure the exterminator really sprays and powders etc.

    2. They can come in through the smallest holes around pipes and fittings etc.

    3. Keep your cereal in the refrigerator (and all perishables in rodent proof heavy grade plastic containers).  Don't leave anything on the floor.

    4. At the grocery store ask for plastic bags and get rid of any paper bags or boxes right away.  (In restaurants - they come in with your deliveries).  They can nest in paper and cardboard.

    5. Take your outdoor shoes off before entering your home.  If you step on one can bring your eggs into your home.

That's all I can think of for now...  Good Luck.  My DH works in the city and travels all over - we're scared of getting bed bugs now!

  • Like PP mentioned, DON'T STEP ON A ROACH AGAIN.  The females can carry their eggs on their backs, if you step on a roach and then wear your shows inside, you can carry the eggs inside your home.  Pour bleach down your drain pipes.  When we lived in an apartment, we had 1 and the maintenance guy told us that when it rains they come up through the drain pipe and to periodically pour a cup or two down.
  • Ewwww!!!!

    Good luck.

  • Are they regular sized or do they seem larger than "normal".  If they are bigger than "normal" roaches, then most likely you have what is considered a german cockroach/wood roach.  They will probably never completely go away.  I too live in GA and I am very familiar with them.  We encounter them most times when it rains.  They will also be prevalent if you live in a place with more trees than the average house (woods behind you/etc).

Just keep doing what your doing, maybe get some roach motels, and keep your house as clean as possible so that beyond wanting to come into a dry/cool place (your house), they wont have much more desire to make your house their home.

  • UGH! we are having the same issue and I am freaked out! they are giant and run real fast across the floor! Tuesday and Wednesday this week are completely designated to a good scrub of the place from top to botton. I know they will never go away but gee they are sure awful to see running across my rug! ahh!
  • Just an FYI kaymay- they can run while on their backs! I found that out the hard way today! Gross!
  • If you are talking about the large roaches (or palmetto bugs--nice name for a big, ugly roach lol) they come from outside and there isn't much you can do to completely get rid of them.  You see them inside this time of year because it is more damp and humid outside.  Once the weather cools off and dries out, they will go away. Now the little ones are another story--they will nest inside your home. The other posters gave you good advice for getting rid of those.
  • Ewwww.. there is nothing that can disturb a perfectly good night of sleep more than seeing a huge roach.. especially one anywhere near you!  I totally feel your pain.

In addition to all the above suggestions when we lived in GA we kept all our drains closed when they were not in use.  They are like moths and will travel towards light sources.  They can still slide through a closed drain but it blocks more light than an open one.

  • Welcome to the south! I despise roaches...I have what DH calls an irrational fear of them. They make me want to jump out of my skin when I see them.

Make sure you get your home treated once a quarter (in the summer we get it done every month as well). The bleach down the drain is also a good method for keeping them out of the drain.

I have lived in the south my whole life and have never been able to fully get rid of the roaches, but with exterminating it seems to have kept them at bay.

When we lived in Georgia, our exterminator said they liked plastic bags too.  We switched entirely to canvas and it seemed to help a bit.

I used to hate turning on the kitchen light in the morning and seeing them scatter.  :::shudder:::
