Anyone have the Paragard IUD?

Howdy girls,

I had a baby about 3 months ago, and DH and I are all done having children now. My problem is that while I've used BC pills to prevent conception all of my life, they have always wreaked havoc on my body. Ditto for the Depo shot. Pretty much any hormonal method really messes me up. So my midwife suggested that I use the Paragard IUD, which I did. I had it placed about 2 weeks ago or so.

I only had a bit of bleeding for 1 day, and then all was normal. My question is this: Do any of you that have this IUD experience heavier bleeding? I have "heard" that it can cause heavy menstrual flow, and I'm not really looking forward to that. My second question is this: if you did have heavy bleeding, did it lighten after a few months? My midwife said that it can sometimes be nasty for a few months, but if I could tough it out, the bleeding would likely lighten. Any info is appreciated. Thanks girls!

Re: Anyone have the Paragard IUD?

  • I've had my paragard for just over two years now. I can tell you, the bleeding is a biotch. Days 2 and 3 flow heavier than the mighty Mississippi. I go though a super plus tampon in four hrs. on those days. Day 1 is light and I rarely need a tampon days 2 and 3 as stated above day 4 is "normal" and day 5 is just like day 1. Also, the cramps are unbelievable and my cycle is all over the place (it was normal before BCP to begin with). Aside from all that, I still love my paragard. Although, I can't wait till dh gets snipped :)

  • I always had light periods, I have had my paraguard for about 3 years and love it. I do have heavier periods, but they are more like normal periods. I have about1 hour of cramps each cycle that are bad, and about 3 hours of very light cramps. The bleeding got less and less each cycle though.
  • I have had mine for almost a year now and I love it! I have high blood pressure so it's hard to get a dr. to prescribe me combo pills so I needed to take a different route. I have several friends who have one and have loved them so it seemed like the perfect fix until DH gets a vasectomy.

Anyway, yes, the first period was awful, I thought about going to the ER because I was losing so much blood, I went through two-three super plus every hour for about five hours on the first night. I took two advil because I read online it would help with the bleeding and sure enough it calmed down. The rest of my cycles have been pretty regular and heavier than before but nothing as unmanageable or worrisome as the first one. So hang in there, it's definitely worth it after a time: the cramps can be intense but they are also manageable as long as you take some ibuprofen at the first sign of pain to stave off the worse ones. Hot pads are my friend. GL

  • My first one was awful. The next 4 or 5 were not as bad, but still quite a bit heavier. After that they got a lot better, more like before I got mine inserted, and that's how they still are now. I've had mine in for about 3 years, and I love it! I'm very sensitive to hormones, so this is definitely the right choice for me.

  • If your done have children have you thought about your husband getting a vasectomy? That what you won't have to worry about any BC?  My doctor through that out there for me after I had issues with my IUD and don't regret it.  Very easy procedure for the guy.

  • I didnt notice a difference besides the cramping from them putting it in.
  • I have been on paragard for about 6 months now because i can't take anything with hormones. I am already on blood thinners which causes heavier bleeding so I didn't notice a difference. However, some months I have had some pretty severe cramping. You just have to take some Tylenol and invest in a great heating pad. It is totally worth it to have the peace of mind that I will remain baby free for a while.
