Professional carpet clean or DIY?

Our house is 4 years old and it's time to do the carpets.  We do have a cleaner from our MIL but it's a Hoover and not sure if it's going to do the job?

Would you recommend getting them professionally cleaned?  I'm leaning towards that but afraid of the expense.  On the otherhand, moving the furniture, etc. is going to be almost an all day adventure--I'd rather pay someone to do that kind of project for me, LOL.

Re: Professional carpet clean or DIY?

  • If you havent had the carpets done in 4 years, I would go with a professional. In my area, a lot of the carpet cleaning companies publish coupons in the local Pennysaver, and Clipper coupon books.

To me, it is worth the extra money to have it done right, and they move all the furniture as well. I dont like to waste a free day with furniture moving and rug scrubbing.

I have a Hoover rug scrubber, and I only use it for spot cleaning. I dont feel that it is powerful enough to do a good job on the whole carpet.

  • If it's been that long since it's been done, go ahead and have it done professionally.  After that, you should be able to maintain it by vacuuming on a regular basis and renting a Rug Doctor every 6 months or so.

  • I have a Hoover and I love it. I've never had a professional cleaning, but honestly, I can't imagine my carpet any cleaner than what the Hoover gets it.

The Hoover is definitely better than the Rug Doctors you see in stores for rent. It keeps the water hot, and it's a little easier to maneuver.

Can your DH help you move the furniture?

  • I have a rug doctor. My husband bought it for me a few years ago. I love it. I clean our carpeting every spring and fall. With 2 dogs and 3 kids its hard to keep the carpeting clean.
  • Shop around for some quotes and then you can decide. Definitely hit up the small mom and pop operations in comparison to the national chains.  In Phoenix we recently did 2 bedrooms for $60 which I didn't think was too expensive at all.

  • i'd also recommend the professional cleaner.  We were lucky enough to find a mom and pop shop that only charges $30 a room.  We've used them for years.  That's incredibly cheap, especially compared to what a place like Stanley Steamer charges...it's such a rip off.

I personally think the retail cleaners get the carpet too wet, but that's just my opinion.  I'm sure they're perfectly fine for others.  When the cleaners leave my house, my carpets are almost completely dry.  love it (actually need to get it done too, so thanks for the reminder  :-))

  • LittleLamb- I would recommend a professional. If you decide to go that route, I work for Stanley Steemer and would be happy to offer you a discount. If you'd like, you can email me at asender@steemer.com and we can discuss details. Thanks!
