best detergent for a crappy dishwasher

hello ladies.

I've been reading a lot of these posts for awhile and love all the information you've given.

H and I moved into our new house about 7 months ago, it came with a real basic GE washer ( think builder grade ) I have yet to get a fully clean/spot free load of dishes out of it yet.  There is a spout for Jet Dry, which I have filled, but it doesn't seem to empty.

I've tried Cascade gel, Cascade gel packs, Finish cubes with the ball in the middle ... nothing seems to work.

When I wash the dishes by hand, I do not get the spots/streaks, so I don't think it is the water, I'm so sick of washing the dishes by hand after they've been in the dishwasher.

any suggestions would be helpful ...  thanks !

Re: best detergent for a crappy dishwasher

  • My old dishwasher was a builder grade crap GE.

If it makes you feel better it only lasted a year and a half after the control panel died for the 3rd time and then we got a new one.

The only soap that worked for me was Great Value powder (walmart). Yeah, the cheapest stuff you can buy. The Target generic powder worked as well too.

Cubes and liquids always left streaks.

Jet dry seemed to make it worse so I just filled the dispenser with vinegar and that helped a ton as well.

Now I have a better dishwasher and use cascade packs or whatever I feel like buying.

  • My dishwasher is a mid-grade, but I also haven't found anything better than the Great Value powder.  We saved an old pickle jar to pour the powder into, and scoop out one tsp at a time for washing. It works better, lasts longer, and is much cheaper than those Finish ball things.

We also use vinegar instead of Jet Dry.  I still get a few water spots because I don't use the auto-dry, but overall it works well.

    My dishwasher is SOOOOO bad.

I'm not sure if my detergent is good, but every week I run the dishwasher empty with 2 cups of vinegar.  It cleans the gunk out and seems to help.

  • I was told to run the water in your sink on hot so the dishes start out with hot water from the beginning of the cycle..much better.

  • We had very little success with powder so we use the gel detergent.  We buy the bottles in bulk from Costco.
  • Ours is pretty bad too (3 year old GE Profile), I end up re-washing many of the dishes. I have had the repairman come out (he of course recommended we buy a brand new $800 Bosch dishwasher from their store), he couldn't find anything wrong with it except he said it was a crappy dishwasher to begin with. Another tip he gave me was to use the "cheapest" brand of powder you can find (i.e. Wal-Mart, Costco, Target, whatever) and to just use a teaspoon (!!) of it. He said that he's seen far too many people ruin their new dishwashers using those gel-tabs (which I always used to buy before his little tip). Gunks up the system, he said, and is far too much detergent for your needs. To be honest, I've only noticed a slight improvement since taking his advice. I'm not sure what the solution is. I do think we need a new dishwasher, but I hate replacing something that is practically new.
