Question about PHR certification
What did you do to prepare for the test?
I'm currently unemployed, but worked in HR for the required two years and I'm hoping this will help me get my next job.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
Re: Question about PHR certification
I am preparing right now for the Dec test window...Next spring testing window the requirements are becoming stricter.
I am taking a 12 wk study group presented by my local SHRM chapter
I have audio CDs
study group lets you check out the SHRM Learning System
Anne Borgeous book
additional study group with sub-group formed at the larger SHRM study group
I took the PHR in 2005 after attending a 12-week course presented at a local college. The course included the SHRM study system. I decided to take the SPHR in 2009 and used the same books to self-study.
Overall, the thing I found most useful was the sample tests that were provided on CD with the learning system. One of the most difficult aspects of both tests, I thought, was the wording of the questions. The SHRM materials were the closest replica of the actual question format.
Good luck!
i definitely recommend taking a prep workshop series. If not, you can still order the books but it takes a lot of dedication, discipline and time to review the books on your own. The workshops offer pre-testing, quizzes and group discussions that really allow you to put things in prespective.
Good luck!
I took (and passed) the test in Dec. 07. I did not participate in a study group or take the SHRM class. I bought two books from Borders about 12 weeks before the test - each practice book included a DVD with practice tests on them. I took the 1st HRCI practice test at about 8 weeks out and determined the areas I needed to focus on for studying and then took the 2nd HRCI test at 2 weeks out and then focused the last 2 weeks on only those areas that I was weakest.
I've had friends/colleagues who used the SHRM learning system not pass the test and say that they didn't feel it prepared them, so I decided to try the self-study route and it worked for me. However, I know that I generally do well with self study, and not as well in group or classroom environments. I'd say draw on your previous educational experience to determine what ways you study and learn best.
GL with the test!
take as many practice exams as you can!! seriously after reading the prep books I found being exposed to as many different ways of asking a question really helped me to solidify I knew the information.
Good luck...when are you taking the exam? There are changes coming in 2011! Also you may want to visit HRA NCA in DC they have tons of events...
