So my wonderful dh gave me his cold and my throat is killing me. So without thinking i went to the store and bought some tea because i thought tea was safe. I got the Sleepytime Throat Tamer and then i read on the back "consult a doc if preg" I looked it up on babycenter about herbal teas, and it says to avoid teas that have chamomile, licorice root and lemongrass... all which are in this tea. I am now sitting here crying because i cant get ahold of my mom to ask her if its okay to drink or not! Am I being nuts? Should I just drink the darn stuff since I cant take meds?
Thanks.

This will probably sound bitchy but I don't understand why you're torn here. If the box says don't drink it and babycenter says don't drink it then don't drink it.
The box doesnt say dont drink it. Its because chamomile can make your uterus contract. And I dont think that at this stage a little tea is going to harm the LO, people do a lot worse things.
Well I guess that makes it ok then.
It doesnt make it 'okay'. I looked back on babycenter and there were experts that said its fine, as long as its small amounts. Each person/doctor is going to be different. My mom got ahold of a family friend who couldn't find her book to tell her why it was bad, but she said if she was pregnant she would drink it. She has 4 kids and her dad is a doctor.
Ditto.

I don't think it's one of those things that's proven bad for you, or that everyone would stay away from -- like sudafed, milkshakes and softserve, and cold cuts and bacon. So, it's up to you and your personal comfort level. You can't be perfect for 40 weeks. Sometimes a woman wants bacon!
Me, personally, I would try other things and stay away from it. I cut out all tea except ones especially for pregnant women.
You can take meds. there are some that are safe for baby. For a cold you can take these:
Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Tylenol Cold
Warm salt/water gargle
Saline nasal drops or spray
Sudafed, Actifed, Dristan, Neosynephrine*
Robitussin DM, Trind-DM, Vicks Cough Syrup, Romilar, Halls*
Do not take "SA" (sustained action) forms of these drugs or the "Multi-Symptom" forms of these drugs.
Here's a good link to meds you can take while pregnant for a variety of things. http://www.webmd.com/baby/taking-medicine-during-pregnancy
My doctor had me avoid several kinds of tea until I was full term at 37 weeks. (Red Raspberry Leaf Tea especially).
Why risk it?
Seriously? Really?

I agree but mine is who the hell are you?

Thanks for the update. I appreciate being filled in. That sounds like a really unfortunate turn of events.
Sorry to hear that MrsStreff got some unwanted negative attention. It's a good thing she's a tough cookie and can handle it. :-)
Sorry to hear that there was other drama with others on our board getting mixed up. I know that we occasionally get into the "what's the purpose of this board" and "how do we balance letting people vent and also giving honest feedback" discussions, which it looks like we're at today.
And I'm sorry to hear that this has turned into another point of drama, yet again, for Amye. I'm not sure how she doesn't recognize what she brings on herself on these boards, and manages to shirk responsibility for it in the process. I think the posting from a week or so ago about getting some additional support and help continues to ring true. When the nest becomes your playground for working out your own issues, it can sometimes turn ugly, and unhelpful.
Well said Kathy.
Oi, I am glad I missed this post this weekend.
Streff, does your OB's office or hospital have a 24 hr ask-a-nurse line? Sometimes insurance companies do too. I'd call them an ask next time you have a question like this. Its likely though that you are going to get very mixed answers as many providers have very different opinions on what is safe/unsafe to take while pregnant (think of the age old debate of whether a glass of wine here or there while pregnant. You'll find docs on either side).
Hahah- I guess I missed most of the drama too:) because I didnt see Amye's post at all. And i got so confused after that one random post.. So I just didnt read anymore.
I understand everyone has their own opinion and that by posting something here or anywhere one can create drama. I am out of my 1st tri and I went with my guts and my friends answer. A little bit of tea isnt going to hurt anything. I was able to drink a 1/2 cup that night and my throat felt amazing. The next morning my sore throat was gone! I loved too how kelly's next post was about honey being bad and you guys told me to just eat hot water with honey:) its just funny:) I love you all even though there is drama here and there.
