Questions about a doctor

H desperately needed a new primary care doctor and transfered to someone new.  This someone new just so happens to be someone I was loosely friends with in high school.  Based upon my age and necessary schooling, she has likely been in practice for about 2 years.  If she's anything like how she was in HS, I'm sure she's an amazing physician.  Her fresh-out-of-school-ness was one of the reasons H wanted to go to her.  He's more in favor of a newbe than an old-timer since the information is more up-to-date and research is fresh, along with email access and notifications.

Questions:

-Would you feel comfortable going to someone you "knew" in the past?

-If so, would you feel comfortable dishing out the dirty details of a medical problem, should the occasion arise?

Re: Questions about a doctor

  • I don't know.....I find it funny how I have no problem telling all the personal details to a complete stranger, but would think twice about someone that I used to "know"....it's a toughie.

  • I don't know that I personally would.  I've also had rumors spread before, though, by people who should have remained under a confidentiality clause but were friends of family and such.  So, no -- I don't think I'd dish out ALL of the dirty details on anything medical.  Sometimes anonymity is a good thing to me.
  • I'm super timid about that stuff so I would be very hesitant about seeing someone that I already knew. However, I'd like to think that I'd give them a chance and let them build the trust between us like any doctor has too.

  • These comments are the things that are holding me back from switching.  I'll see how H does after his first appointment. If he's really happy with her, I'll consider the switch further, but I'm not sure how I'd react if I had some type of more "personal" need.  I'm a fairly open person, so maybe it wouldn't be a problem.

PP was right:  Telling a total stranger is easier.

  • I agree with PP. Maybe meet with her and see what your comfort level is. I know there are people from my HS I would be fine seeing as my doctor and others I would not.
