Help...

Some of you may remember that I switched BC pills last month and I was worried because the pharmacy gave me the generic of what my doctor told me she was going to put me on. Well for the most part everythings been great but I've been having horrible mood swings and I can't take it anymore. My doctor prescribed me Ortho Tri Cyclen (I was on the lo) because I never had mood swings on the lo, but I needed something stronger. Well the pharmacy gave me Tri Nessa and I'm having bad mood swings. Here's my question, do you think if I call the pharmacy and explain whats going on they'll give me the regular instead of the generic? Or do I need to call my doctor and have her call the pharmacy? I've only been on this pill for 5 weeks now but I hate being in a bad mood all the time. Sorry for the long story but what do you girls think?

Re: Help...

  • ugh that stinks!!  I would call your doctor first and see what they think. They may just call the pharmacy directly and put in an RX for the brand name.  Hope it gets worked out :(

I never did well with any versions of Ortho Tri Cyclen.   I take the generic of Lo-Ovral and have for about 7 years.  I tried recently to switch to see if a pill would help with my acne, but I was so moody I gave up and went back to my old faithful.

  • I forgot to add that I'll have to wait a couple weeks regardless of what I do because I just started the 2nd week on my pack. This really does stink because I had no problems with my period last month and its even made the girls a little bigger. Lol and when your as small as I am you appreciate a little more!

I've been told though that it can take up to 3 or 4 months before your body gets used to a higher dosage of hormones, should I wait another month and see if this clears up?

  • Yeah, I'd call your doctor first.  They might want to switch you to something else.

its true it can take a few months for your body to adjust, but if you are really feeling this crappy, call the dr and see what they suggest.  I waited 6 months on that other one and then called it quits.

  • Thanks girls! Since I still have 2 1/2 weeks left on this pack I'll wait it out and see how my moods go. If its bad I'll go ahead and call the doc.

  • I would think the generics would still have the same hormone levels as the regular pills. I think generics are usually practically identical which is why they are interchangeable.  I used to always use generics, but now I use nuva ring so there is no generic.

  • Since I'm new to the whole US system (coming from Canada), DH explained to me you can request the non-generic if that's what the doc prescribed. It will be more expensive and that's why the pharmacy automatically gives you the generic. Like PP said, the generic should be the same as the other one you were prescribed. I would call and talk to your doctor, or the pharmacy to make sure if you think that's what it is. Maybe since this is not the same at the original one you were on it's causing the mood swings.
  • For some insurances it can be a huge price difference between the generic of a pill and the brand name.  With my last insurance you had to try the generic and have the doctor certify there was a reason you HAD to have the brand name for them to even cover it.
