We have termites?

Our condo assoc. just posted a sign that we have termites and there will be a mtg on Saturday 10/18 to discuss with a termite control company - and my husband and I are traveling that day. Has this happened to anyone? What did they do to get rid of the termites? In the mean time, do we need to worry about our dog at all and do we need to do anything to protect him from bites? I'm obviously uneducated in this ... I appreciate any and all feedback. Thanks!

Re: We have termites?

  • Usually they'll just spray to get rid of them and prevent them from coming back.  Termites won't harm you or your pets...they like wood and can do LOTS of damage to a house/apartment/condo/etc.  They literally eat the wood of your house....not good.  I guess I would find out if they're spraying inside your home; if they are and your dog is there, then I may make arrangements for him/her to go somewhere because that's not good for anyone to be around.  But since you're going to be gone, I would assume the dog is going with you or staying elsewhere.  It's not a big deal and it's good that your assoc. is taking care of it immediately before a lot of damage is done.
  • It dpends on which termites the complex has. There are 2 types subterranean and drywood. Both won't harm your pets or you they only eat wood, but they can do a lot of damage to your home. But the treatments are very different. subterranean termites get sprayed drywood termites mean you need to tent the area. If that's the case everyone has to move out for that time. The tent is up for a few days. Most likely it's just subterranean termites. I would call the mangers of the condos and tell them your can't get to the meeting that day and see if they can give you the info you need to know or if they can give you the name of the company who is taking care of the termites. So you know what is going on and ask what day they are spraying and does your dog need to be inside or gone for the day.
