Am I the only one...

whose husband is OBSESSED with football?

My DH has done almost nothing all weekend but watch football. He is working nights and 12 hour shifts right now through the week, so I know it is his time to relax. But I am not a huge football fan. I'll watch A game....but 8 hours is a little much. It gives me time to read, do homework, etc. so it's all good. I just wished I understood football better/enjoyed football so we could share the experience!

He did take me to the apple orchard this morning, so I guess I can't complain. He is adorable. :)

Re: Am I the only one...

  • Mine is obsessed, too.  I love to watch football, but DH loves to watch the post-game analysis on ESPN.  He'll watch it for hours!

I think it's so sweet that your husband took you out this morning, though!  We have an apple orchard in our area, too, but it's closed by the time DH gets off of work.  I think I'm going to pick up some apples next weekend and make him my grandma's recipe for warm homemade applesauce. :-)

  • I'm trying to get into it, I watch a lot more than I did when we started dating. (It used to be football = naptime). Suggestions for how I can get more into it? I really want to, because he is sooo into it.

  • I like going to games, but watching it at home is not nearly as fun. My husband is quite the fan. He gets so loud that he scares the dog. I guess that is one arguement for a man cave!

  • I'm actually the bigger sports fan than DH.  He really does not care but will watch games with me.  I probably watch less sports now than I used to.  But he is more than happy to watch big games or flip to games on a regular basis.  If we are watching TV, he'd rather watch movies.

  • I agree with Elishabelle.  Watching games live is definitely better than watching it on TV.  DH and I are going to see University of Michigan play in a couple of weeks.  I'm not a huge Michigan fan (DH is), but I love the atmosphere!  You might enjoy it more if you went to see a game.

If you really want to learn more about the game, there's a book called "Get you're own damn beer, I'm watching the game! A girlfriend's guide to loving pro football."  I've never read it, but I know people who have and said it really helped.

  • Thanks, I'll get that book. I will watch football, but usually after like 1/2 a gmae, I lose interest. I know it is really because I a.) don't have a "team"...the college I went to is mediocre. and b.) I don't totally understand it. Ok, I don't understand it. I'll get that book. Thanks!!

  • I like watching football, but all day is too much for me..especially if it's a beautiful day outside! We just got the ESPN Red Zone because H is a Pats fan and I'm a Steelers fan, and we don't get either of their games down in Houston. We actually live down the street from the Texan's stadium, so it's easy to get excited about football here.

I definitely didn't like football before I knew the game well. If you know what's going on, it's so much easier to watch! Also, going to a live game is a ton of fun.

Also, you could get a youth size (or nerf) football, go to a park one afternoon, and throw the ball around with your husband. It's fun, and will help you understand why he likes the game so much.

  • My DH is probably the biggest football fan on this board. He coaches high school football so he's doing something football related every night after he comes home from practice. We're both big college football fans so we spend a lot of our Saturdays watching games. Sometimes, we've been known to watch games ALL day. But we both like football so it works. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely times when I'd rather be doing something else, but I know he doesn't get to relax that much during the week so watching football is his downtime.

I agree with Tailspin - knowing what is going on when you watch a game makes it so much more enjoyable. And nothing beats the energy of going to a game live - especially college football games. There's really nothing like it.

Another idea to help you enjoy it a little more - maybe invite a couple of friends over to watch the game. Get some awesome game food together and make it a social event as well.

  • My husband really only gets into Rockies baseball games and UWyo football games.  Sometimes he still cares about the Packers.  He's not really that into it, but sports is his "default" TV program--when you just want the TV on.  That's what drives me crazy.  There could be something mildly interesting on another channel, but no, he'd rather sort of watch two random colleges play football.

I get really easily bored with sports on TV and it doesn't bother either of us.  I just do homework, clean, read, etc.  There's always something I can be doing, and he likes to have his time to zone out and not have to make conversation.

  • Oh no, mine is obsessed too. Mostly with his Panthers. But we watched three games together yesterday, a college game together Saturday, the Saints Thursday and I'll watch the game tonight.

I'm getting to be a big fan too.

My suggestion for getting more into it, play fantasy football.

No seriously. I'm not crazy. That helped me a ton. It gets you more invested into different teams and you learn different players. Then you want to watch more to see how your guys are doing. It's great. It's been a huge help.

I still nap too. H and I napped together during the third quarter of the Cowboys/Redskins game last night. I took a little snooze during the 9ers game too.

  • Mine is def obsessed! He watches football from Thursday to Sunday. I love to watch football too  but not like him. I dont mind watching our teams play, but he watches every single game that comes on. He yells at the tv when his team messes up. It's quite humerous.

I agree, Kayla.  This is my first year playing FF, and I have already found it to be extremely helpful.  I've always loved the Ravens (they are our home team), but playing FF really helps you to familiarize yourself with other players and other teams.  It's fun!  My husband has been playing FF for many years and I'm glad I finally joined him.  Now I know why he knows so much about pro football, aside form the fact he started playing at age 8 and played up through college.

I also recommend reading The Blind Side.  My mom got DH this book for Christmas because it feature's Ravens' Michael Oher, but I really wanted to read it before seeing the movie.  It is SUCH a good book, but it also really goes into how the game of football works, strategies, past players, etc.  not overboard, but enough to be really interesting [at least I thought] to someone who isn't 100% familiar with the game.

  • You ladies have been so super helpful!! I'm glad I am not the only one who is married to someone who watches football and ESPN for hours at a time!

    Two more things:

    1. SweetCFly: Is The Blind Side more detailed than the movie? I would like to read it either way actually.....

    2. Is it too late to sign up for fantasy football? My DH has never playd because his work schedule changes on a regular basis and just doesn't have time, but I'm currently psuedo unemployed. I find I have quite a bit of time on my hands (compared to when I was working full time.) I know the season has started....is it too late?

    1. YES, the book is SO much more detailed than the movie.  That being said, it was one of those movies where I felt like the movie was a pretty fair representation of the book itself and Michael Oher's story.  It just doesn't go into as much detail about the game of football. There are at least 3 20- 30-page chapters in The Blind Side talking solely about the game of football (all in ways which are in context to Michael's story).

    2.  I think it might be too late to create a fantasy league, because you have to do that before the regular season begins.  But, it may not be too late to join an already existing league... I'm not too sure how all that works given that it's only my first year.  You may have to wait until next year because there's a draft and that's how you pick your players.  Unless you just pick your team with whatever's left from your league's draft.  The problem is that you may not be able to get a good team because all the better players would already have been drafted in the live fantasy draft.  I am actually in a league with my local board Nesties, so I'll check out and see if there's room/people can join late.  That one is through Yahoo which is a free FF league.  My family does our league through ESPN, and it is also free.  I believe DH's big FF league is through NFL and it's not free... there is money involved and the winner gets the sum.
