Dogs

Hi,

I don't usually post on this board, but I'm hoping you can help me out!  My husband and I are looking to adopt a small puppy and I am looking for recommendations for where to adopt one from.  I am from Indiana, and out there you can always find people giving away puppies from their litters for free in the paper or you can pay less than $100 at a shelter.  I looked at one shelter this weekend and their adoption fee was about $400!  I don't mind paying a fee, but I just want to make sure I'm paying what is reasonable.

 Any recommendations?

  • Hi,

That's so exciting that you are looking to adopt.  The MSPCA is wonderful!  My husband I have looked at Nevins Farm in Methuen up by where we live.  I think they also have a location in Boston and down the Cape.  I am not sure where you live.   I also am not sure about adoption fees but we really enjoy going to Nevins.

  • A shelter had an adoption fee of $400? I see the Blue Dog Shelter is $425 for puppy fees. What in the hell?

A $400 adoption fee is high. I think $250 from a RESCUE is the norm, but you can certainly find them for less, especially at municipal shelters. And remember, the difference is you are getting a puppy or a dog who is spayed/neutered and UTD on all shots when you adopt. And you are saving a life. When you buy or take a puppy from the newspaper or off the side of the road, you aren't helping the pet overpopulation problem that is caused by people irresponsibly breeding.

With that said, there are some great shelters in the area- Animal Rescue League, MSPCA, City of Boston shelter, not to mention the countless rescues in the area.  A small breed puppy isn't going to be easy to come by- they are snatched up quickly. When we get them, we have dozens of applications within an hour of posting them on petfinder, so we never have them for long at all.

I don't think an adoption fee of $400 is right at all.

  • Not sure where you are in MA (I apologize if you said) but MH and I got our girl from Cape Ann Animal Aid in Glouchester. We're on the SS but it was worth the trip.

    GL!

You should also consider older dogs - mine is 3 - 7 and I just love her to death!

And another perk to older dogs is they often come potty trained! And I know some shelters have a lower adoption fee for an adult dog.

AndreaB makes a good point. My own rescue was 2 y/o when we got her. I love fostering puppies, but they are a lot of work. I do like my adult fosters because they just transition into housebreaking so easily.  No chewing and teething stage to get through, etc!

But I see why people want to raise a little puppy.  Our rescue just admitted 3 pit bull puppies but they won't be small when they grow up. And if you live within Boston city limits, we can't adopt them out to you (not you, specifically, just in general). Hmmm.

I believe we have 2 beagles on our wait list too but they are adults.

  • my husband and i LOVE the north east animal shelter up in salem.  they're a very large shelter and it's always clean and they're all so nice.   i would definitely check them out.  http://www.northeastanimalshelter.org/adopt/

  • The MSPCA network is awesome. http://www.mspca.org/adoption/ I think their standard fee is like $350, and includes all kinds of shots and vacs. Regardless, it's not like they're making money off the process...
  • I think everyone else already gave great advice. I'd only like to add that browsing petfinder.com consistantly will hopefully help you find what you'd like. You can search for specifically the dog you're looking for and do some research on adoption fees. Good luck!
  • Thank you everyone for the recommendations!  We are going to look into the shelters you guys mentioned.

We are definitely open to a younger adult dog.  I would love to have a puppy, but I know it would be much easier on us to get an adult dog.

    Thanks again!

Yes there is a Boston location.  I actually was volunteering there for awhile.  Here's a link with the info:  http://www.mspca.org/adoption/boston/   They really take good care of the animals and make sure they're healthy and ready for adoption.  Good luck!!
