How to get the smoke smell out of our closets?
We bought a house a few months ago. The previous owner smoked and the entire place wreaked of smoke. We have gotten new carpet and painted as well as scrubbing down the walls beforehand. I still smell smoke on our clothes and other things in the closet. It is kinda faint, but you can still smell it. I didn't paint the closets and really don't want to, but I want to get the smell out. What can I do or what products can I use to get the smoke smell out of the closets and by extension keep our clothes from smelly smokey?
Re: How to get the smoke smell out of our closets?
Then only thing that worked for my parents was painting everything and recarpeting all etc.
However you could try scrubbing the walls down with a strong solution like apple cider vinegar (but it might also take off your paint)
Have you "febreezed" the walls and clothes stored? That might help cover the smell a little?
There really isn't much you can do once the smoke has gotten "into" all of the fibers unfortunately.
I've seen "smoker" candles? Maybe try burning one?
I can give suggestions but like I said, The only way my parents got rid of the smell was painting everything!!
My aunt is a huge smoker...HUGE. My mom cleans houses and when my aunt went to clean (she wanted to wash the yellowness off the walls) my mom suggested murphys oil and warm/hot water. You only need a small capfull of the murphy's oil (comes in a plastic bottle - or at least mine did) and wash the walls.
It not only leaves a fresh smell but it gets all of the grossness off the walls. It doesn't do any damage to the paint or anything. I've also used the same solution at my grandma's (used to be smoker) on her wood paneling. As long as the rag wasn't soaking wet, I would wipe the paneling and dry it off. Works WONDERS!!
I think a semi-gloss paint will cover it, too.
You really don't want all you wall semi-gloss, but the closet would be OK
