More Resume Help

Can some of you "business" Nesties give me some resume help? What sections are good to include? How is your resume laid out? I'm struggling b/c I've only done a teaching resume in the last few years (and obviously not very well), so I don't know what the business world looks for in a resume.

For instance, I worked at a marketing firm during college. So that section will look like this:

Name of Company

Title

Dates

Bulleted accomplishments within that job (3? 4? What's kosher here?)

Right??? I've been Googling some resume websites for help, but I just feel so lost. *sigh*

Re: More Resume Help

  • Also, is a skills section still the norm? Do I list computer skills within a skills section or does computer skills get it's own spot?

  • My resume has my education info (bachelor's degree, date earned and institution) at the top, followed by jobs (listed as you mentioned). I keep my resume to one age and don't have a skills section. I usually try to highlight particular things in my cover letter or when asked on an application.

This is what mine looks like too.  I think I have Company names bolded, job titles italicized, then the details in the regular font to help distinguish the different things.

  • Got it, Laura. You can delete.

Thanks girls. I think I'm on the right track. It's hard to switch gears so drastically (and reluctantly).

  • I basically used the layout you described for previous work and included a skills section (I think, it's been 3 years since I looked at it!).  If you'd like, I can email you my resume to give you an example of how I did the teaching to business switch - I don't know if it's a great example but I got a job out of it. :-)  Just let me know.

Thanks for the offer, Juli. I think I've finished it for now. Basically I listed my positions, teaching and non, in order and put in key phrases that would help in a clerical/assistant position. "Maintained confidential student assessment and enrollment records, worked jointly with co-teacher" type things. Is that how you did yours?

Yup, pretty much exactly like that - highlighting the skills needed for teaching that transfer to other jobs - organization, professionalism, working with a variety of people, etc.  Good luck!

  • Looks like you're on the right track but wanted to say not to beat yourself up about your teaching resume.  I know teaching jobs are hard to get so I don't think it is a resume issue!
