A debate or not?
I guess this is the big "debate" going on. I think it's easy to turn it into an OU vs. OSU debate. Simply because this is a huge thing in Norman where the majority of the crowd shouts 'SOONERS!" at the end of the National Anthem, whereas in Stillwater, very few people shout "COWBOYS!".
Basically, the jist is this: the debate is the shouting of 'SOONERS!" at the end of the NA. OU is playing Air Force this weekend and people are finally starting to come out and say this has to/needs to change. Especially given their opponent for this weekend. What do you think? Does it matter? Is it disrespectful?

My thoughts: it's just plain disrespectful. It's always really bothered me. It even bothers me when/if I hear "COWBOYS!". I don't like it and I think people need to be more respectful to those who are in the forces, those who are overseas, those who have lost their lives, and all those in the past who served. I don't like it at all.

I think it's disrespectful, too. The National Anthem is an ode to our country, and changing the words like that just isn't right. I've heard people say it at OSU games [except saying Cowboys instead of Sooners, obviously], and I've glared - hard - at them. One got chewed out at the end of last season by a fellow season ticket holder.
I know it's not going to stop, but I hope there's enough decency in the stadium to respect the team coming in and not say it. I always listen to WWLS while I'm driving to work, and they mentioned there will be a fly-over. Maybe that'll drown it out.
Honestly though - I know it's kinda been an issue in the past, but would it really be a huge issue like this if Air Force wasn't coming to town? I'm just curious.

DH is active duty AF and we're both Sooner alum. I can tell you that he doesn't see the big deal. It doesn't change the meaning of the song because some people change the last word during a game. It is the home of the Sooners, and the Cowboys, and the Longhorns, and the free and the brave. It's home to all of us.
It's a silly tradition that is completely meaningless. I understand people get all patriotic and defensive because they're playing Air Force but perhaps that energy would be better spent actually doing something to support the troops instead of talking about things that, in the long run, really don't matter.
That is my complete opinion.

I tried to click on the link when you posted it on facebook yesterday but it wasn't working for me. And I don't have speakers on my work computer so I can't listen to it now.
Anywho, I don't see the big deal. Like others have said, it's just a silly tradition that I doubt you would be able to get everyone in the stands to stop doing. But I went to Norman North, and they yell "home of the t-wolves" at the end, so I guess I've always been around people saying something other than "home of the brave". And like runnergirl said, it is home of the sooners, cowboys, and any other team you can think of.
Ami - I thought I heard everyone say "home of the sooners" at this past game...but I was in the student section so maybe it was just them saying it?

I went to training in Biloxi for two months. There was an active duty AF OU alum there. In the afternoons, we played volleyball during the time they played the national anthem in the afternoon. He said "sooners" under his breath.
Wiki says Tulane signs 'home of the wave' - they said this is a tradition. I googled it and didn't see a lot of angry people over that.
I agree about actually doing something vs getting so uptight about something so silly and meaningless.

When we go to the Dallas Stars game every time they sing stars the whole crowd shouts stars. I don't remember if they say stars at the end of the anthem though.
