Can y'all help me with my yard (AKA weed patch)?

I posted this on the Landscaping board, but thought y'all might have some ideas...

So our lawn, once nice, is now completely overtaken by weeds... dandelion, clover, that tall, wheat-y looking grass (not sure what it's called), you name it. There is very little grass at this point, really.

At this point I wonder if the best approach wouldn't be to kill it all, re-seed, and start over this fall.

Is this a good or bad idea? And what is the best method to go about it? Our yard is small-- less than .25 acres.

Re: Can y'all help me with my yard (AKA weed patch)?

  • the wheaty looking stuff is probably rye. yep, i'd kill it all and reseed. maybe just invest in a lawn company to take care of it for you and make sure its done right. hopefully spring comes next year and it grows in thick and green!
  • Did it just get bad this year or was it pretty overgrown w/ weeds last year too?  If just this year, I'd probably try and rehab by applying a weed killer. We found the ones that you attach to your hose & spray work much better than the pellets you spread. I'd let it work for a few weeks, then I'd aerate/fertilize/seed.
