Flu shots (eta a ?)

So, this year, the CDC or whoever, is recommending everyone (over 6 months) get vaccinated, and not just the traditional at-risk groups of kids, elderly, pregnant, teachers, health care professionals, etc.

If you normally don't get one, does this change your mind?

I never get one, and neither does DH even though I ask him to every year. He teaches, and last year I'm pretty sure he had the flu at least 2 times, possibly 3.  I can only fend off his germs for so long!

ETA: for those of you who have had them in the past, did getting the shot leave you feeling drained for any length of time? I think I have him convinced, but he's wondering when he can do it as he doesn't have any "down" days.

We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

Re: Flu shots (eta a ?)

  • Since I've become an adult, I've gotten one every year.  I absolutely hate needles and flinch while receiving it, but I've decided I it's better to get the vaccine.  I never feel weird/drained after them.
  • I got one last year for the first time in about 10 years with no problems and I did not get the flu.  My OB is making me get one this year and told DH he needed one as well.  I just got mine over lunch at our company health fair since they were free.  It's only been about 30 minutes, but I'm good so far.  I've heard as long as you get the dead virus vaccine, it can't make you sick.
  • I have never gotten one and not sure that I intend to.  A vast majority of people that I know IRL who have gotten it, got sick afterwards.  I have never had the flu either.  I would rather just wash my hands often and use common sense.

  • I've gotten a seasonal flu shot but after my micro class this summer, yes I will be getting one from now on. The shot itself cannot make you come down with the flu - it's a dead virus.

Last fall I got an H1N1 vaccine (the shot, not the nasal mist). I felt fine afterward with no side effects so I can't imagine a seasonal flu shot would be much different.

  • My understanding is that this year, it's H1N1 and seasonal all rolled in to 1 shot.

This is true in almost all cases - I just got the combo shot which I was a little worried about but my doctor assured me it would be fine and it was the best thing to do.

Oh cool, I didn't know that.

  • Ive received a flu shot once, and don't ever intend on doing it again.

     I like to live dangerously.

  • I have never received a flu shot and probably never will. My kids won't either. They've been to the doctor once this year, I think they're strong enough to fight whatever it is that they may catch. I'm just not comfortable introducing any chemicals into our blood streams unnecessarily.

My OB wanted me to get one when I was pregnant with my daughter and I refused, that was an especially scary concept to me. I can't tell you the last time I had the flu, but it was over 4 years ago.

    Yes

I've never had a flu shot (H1N1 or otherwise). I was intrigued by the fact that they were recommending it to everyone, but that makes a lot of sense considering it's a combo vaccine.

I still probably won't get one.

  • I do not get flu shots, and probably never will.  I am with Angel and don't like to put uneccesary things into my body.  (It is nice to hear about someone who didn't get one while pregnant either - as I often think about what I will do in the future once preggo!)  I sometimes feel guilty over not getting it as I work with fragile babies, but I use extra precautions and have strict rules about any sort of sickness that I make sure the families I work with follow.

  • I dont get them every year like i should, i skipped last year accidentally. I have only had 1 year that i have felt sick from. It is a dead virus so you can't actually get the flu from it, but it still stimulates a reaction from the body in order to gain antibodies towards the flu, so it can make you feel a bit sick because of the reaction (usually just a little feverish and maybe achy) I think its well work the little but of possible sickness in order to fight of the flu!
  • Thanks all for your responses.  I told DH to make sure he didn't do the live culture one (nasal spray I think) and he's more likely to be fine than not.

I've always had a devil may care attitude about flu shots (for myself at least) and have never done it. But last year with DH getting it 3 times, he was miserable. And he usually won't take time off even though he knows he should to recuperate (and, you know, not infect other people!). Ah, the downfall of the self-employed.  So when he gets sick, it last FOR.EVER.  And that of course ups my risk of catching it from him.

  • I have gotten them almost every year and have never felt drained or run down.  That is just a big myth.  So many people fear that they will get sick from the vaccine, but the fact is that the virus they inject in you is dead.

If, however, you get the nasal spray (that kids like to opt for), it is possible to feel a little yucky, because there is a partially alive virus in it.

  • I have never gotten one and this is my third year teaching.  I should probably do that.
