Sorry to be so absent this week, but I have a good (well, sad) excuse. For Labor Day weekend, DH and I went down to SC to visit his mom and grandparents. Specific reason for visit: to celebrate Papa's birthday, and also to see grandma because she hadn't been doing well (suffering from lung cancer). Well, we had a really nice visit over the weekend; on Sunday we brought dinner over and had cake and Papa opened presents. Grandma had seemed to us to be doing better than we had expected, as we knew she was dying, but didn't think it was imminent.
Well, Monday morning, Papa called us at about 6:00 am to say that Grandma had passed away. She died in her sleep, which was a blessing. But we were all so shocked and sad. Grandma had even hidden a present that she was going to give to Papa on his birthday, but she died before she could give it to him. We gave it to him for her that morning (she died on his birthday).
They also were going to celebrate their 66th wedding anniversary this past Thursday, so this week was really hard for Papa. DH and I changed our plane reservations for the return trip from Tuesday to Thursday, so we could be there for the funeral service, which was Wednesday.
It was really sad to lose DH's grandma, she was so sweet to me and I was always thrilled at how she embraced me as a member of the family. The other thing that was sad was watching Papa lose his life mate. It hit me how much I love DH and how I am totally looking forward to a long life with him. I hope we are as lucky to grow old together. Grandma was 87, Papa just turned 88.
It was a rough week, but also really nice to see DH's family, and to feel so much a part of it.
Anyway, I missed you guys!

Many thoughts and prayers to the whole family.
How sorry to hear about your loss :-(
I think that their love story is sweet and inspiring - I think in our day and age of "marry first, divorce later" mentatlity, it can be easy to lose sight of the fact that marriage, at its very best, is designed to last a lifetime. How wonderful that your Grandma and Papa got to experience that kind of lifetime love...How great it was that you were able to visit and see her one last time...she'll always be with you both ;-)
Kiki - I read the story on your blog and it brought me to tears. How amazing that your grandma and grandpa were still so in love. How even more amazing that you were able to be there in her final days.
Many hugs and prayers being sent to your grandpa and your way!!

I'm just catching up on posts so I'm a little late on this, but so sorry to hear about your loss.
TTC #1 since 4/10, Dx: MFI IVF planned for April/May
It's so sad to watch one grandparent deal with the loss of the other, isn't it? I'm terribly sorry for your loss as well, but am happy that she went peacefully and that you and DH got to be there during her final days (and be there for grandpa as he struggled!)
xoxo!
