Help! I have a biter.

Any tips on how to get him to stop?  He laughs when we say "no" right now, he thinks it's a game.  He bit a little girl in daycare yesterday!  He's 16 months, is that too young for time out?

Re: Help! I have a biter.

  • Jake only bites me, when he does it I just loudly say "No Bite". It's effective until he decides he wants to bite again. Jake's biting goes along with teething, when he's not cutting teeth, he doesn't bite.

You could try a time out and see how it works. Jake just got his first time out about a week ago and he's almost 19 months now. We only did 1 minute and we had to repeatedly put him back in the chair for his time out, he got really pissed off about it so I guess it must have had some effectiveness.

  • I was giving Alex 1 min. time outs by that age (although not for biting).  I agree with the "no bite".

Alex bit me once back in the spring, in CVS, and drew blood from my arm.  I still have the scar.  It took everything I had not to go ape-sh*t on him, but I am pretty sure he got the point of how mad I was b/c he's never done it again.  I did throw his Sponge Bob figurine in the trash since that was what "sparked" the incident....and it was the only time I've ever dropped the f-bomb towards him.  At least I didn't spank him or hit him though.  Everyone I tell the story too laughs, so it might be better to hear it in person.

  • You could try and stern growl and a very firm No. It usually makes Monk cry so I dont do it for every small offense but if he is hurting himself or someone else I growl loudly and say no.

  • I do the "No Bite" right now when he tries to bite me, but it has become like a game to him.  He just laughs and tries harder.  I usually end up having to distract him with a toy.  I'm hoping time out will have some impact.  I've slapped his hand before for repeatedly reaching for our floor lamp, and he laughed at that as well.  He's a weird little dude.

Jake's only time out was over a floor lamp, he thought it was a game when I would tell him no when he was chewing on the cord. Eventually I got annoyed enough at constantly saying no that I just put the floor lamp in the basement.

  • Jeff never bite that young, but he likes to do it now.  He gets the no bite, but I also smack his mouth...he knows he shouldn't be doing that.

  • I was the one that got my brother to stop biting. I bit him back...  but I was 7 and I didn't like him.

I hope you can fingure something out. :-

For what it's worth, I don't think he's too young for time out. I know my sister did the time out thing with my younger nephew at that age.
