Linen Closet ?

Our house is OLD (1840's).  And we have a fabulous linen closet in the hall upstairs.  DH is in the process of painting the shelves for me, and I'm going to have him paint the walls inside and we are putting a new piece of carpeting in to replace the old.  My hope is this will "freshen" it up.

BUT... the house is old and I'm trying to figure out a way to keep the linens fresh in there.  I was going to baskets, but now I'm thinking maybe there are better things.

Any ideas?

Re: Linen Closet ?

  • Get yourself some cedar blocks or balls to tuck into the baskets.

  • I love old houses!!! but old smells can pose a problem.

I would suggest you use the baskets you were planning on using or look into some other kind of breathable bins of canvas or fabric.

I would also like to suggest scented drawer liners

or potpourri envelopes or sachets or Smells Begone Odor Absorber

or simply use scented dryer sheets strategically placed in inconspicuous places.

    hope this is helpful!

  • Make it really easy on yourself, Put a box of baking soda in the top far corner of the closet (just like in the fridge) and stick fabric sheets (whatever you throw in the dryer) on the shelves, or even in between one or two of the piles. . It should keep the odor to a minimum with stuff you prolly already have in your house :o)
  • We just bought an older house that the linen closet had a smell to it. I washed down the shelves and walls, and will paint them. but I put a reunzits oder eater air freshner in the closet on the top corner and a couple of dryer sheets for a couple of days, and the smell went away. I dont know if it was because I washed everything down, or because of the air freshners,  but it worked.
