Anyone get rid of cable?

DH wants to get rid of cable.  We don't watch a ton of stuff, but I really like the convenience of a dvr, and we watch some shows on cable stations that we will have to try to watch online.

Has anyone disconnected from cable?  Did you regret it?  I know it's not a life-or-death situation, but it's nice to have all those channels on days when I have nothing to do (or need to procrastinate)!

Re: Anyone get rid of cable?

  • I was without cable for about 2 years before DH moved in, and honestly did not miss it one bit. We have and HD tv now, which we really enjoy for movies, etc. but honestly neither of us watches enough TV to make it worth it.

I really would love to ditch the cable, but it's DH that's holding out. I have to admit, I would really miss HGTV and a few other things, but would get used to it, especially after saving all that $.

  • Do you have a Roku (sp?) box?  Is that worth it?  I think we can get Netflix through our PS3, so that's an option.

The $$ is the big incentive - we figured out we spend about $1000/year on cable.  A lot of shows I can wait and watch on DVD, but some of the stuff I watch never goes to dvd.

We do have a Roku, and Netflix as well (a lot of current stuff doesn't stream yet, so we do still get some movies thru the mail). With all the stuff they're adding to streaming video, I just don't get the point of having cable.

The Roku was only $100 or less and it's great- I can add stuff to my Netflix account as "watch it now" and then see it pop up on my TV. It's like creating your own "on demand" library.

  • Dh and I have talked about it a few times, but we do watch a lot, via winter months, through the DVR and Netflix.  We thought about canceling for the summer, but figured it would be too much of a hassle b/c we have our land line phone & internet through TWC too.

How I wish we could save some money somewhere, have tried, but nope....ugh!  lol

  • We haven't had cable for going on 3 years now! I don't miss that $150 bill at all. We spend about $375 per year now on Netflix, HuLu and our MLB ticket. {baseball fans here}. There are times when i really miss some shows, but not enough to bring it back yet. Plus, Hulu is starting to carry so many shows that not having a DVR doesn't even matter.

We also have everything synced up with our PS3 and at one point the Apple TV.

  • We just canceled our cable!  With Hulu and Netflix (and a PS3) we have everything we like to watch.  It has been a month and we don't miss it one bit!
  • We did, back in OH when B was out of work.  I didn't miss it then, because obviously it was an extra, but it didn't really save us a ton.  We had our cable and internet from the same company, and since we wanted to keep the internet for job searching/applying, just flat out canceling the cable would have jacked up the price for internet.  We ended up getting a slightly slower speed (that we really didn't even notice) and cutting down to the unadvertised $10 a month cable package to save money.

Anyway, check into prices, and shop around your internet if you can, to see if you can save money that way.

If it came down to it again, I'd cut cable, but I'm sorry, I love it, and I love my DVR, and not all the shows I like are online.  I'd rather cut back on eating out or something else we waste money on.  I watch way too much tv, so it wouldn't be a bad thing, but what can I say?  hahaha!

  • We've been cable-free for almost 4 years. Netflix is mandatory though (we only do one disc at a time) and we recently got a Roku from HSBC- I didn't even know what it was!

H questions himself each fall, when football comes back, but so far hasn't thought about it long enough to resubscribe. We cut it for budget reasons in school. Now we could afford it, but I think... do I really want/need it? Truly it was a lot harder when only ABC had their episodes stream online (and even then, not all shows!)

PS- I love your signature, and feel compelled to add:

  • We cut down to basic cable about a year ago, and have thought about getting rid of it altogether.  The only thing that we really watch regularly is the news.  We also have Netflix.  I find that we do more productive things instead of getting sucked into TV (which is so easy to do).
