Anyone want to give their opinion?

I posted this on MM: http://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/42559783.aspx

Anyone want to venture over and give me your opinion?

Re: Anyone want to give their opinion?

  • Obviously your problem is that you're letting your boss tell you what to do. Insubordination is the only way to fix things. Stick out tongue

  • I would express your concerns to your regional boss.  Tell him your thoughts on what you told us - that you don't think it's right, but at the same time you are worried about the backlash, and how it may affect you getting a permanent position.

Personally (in an ideal world), I would think he would be happy for you standing up for yourself and your position - it would make the others in your office look like a$$es.

    Good luck, keep us posted!

  • I'm conflicted:  It kind of falls under the "team player" category and that jobs evolve over time and you sometimes have to take on new responsibilties.  BUT you work for a state agency and that means your job tasks and responsibilities are rigid.  Knowing that, your office is 100% wrong to throw this on you.

But I know I would not be able to go to the big boss.  Can you accelerate the job hunt?

  • Job hunt has been in full force and effect since I took this temp job a year ago, sadly. I haven't had any luck.

I talked to a couple other coworkers earlier and found out a lot of information that I think will make me at least hold off for a few weeks on complaining higher up.  The biggest thing is that if the boss's job is filled internally, the best candidate will likely put an end to this practice on her own because she doesn't agree with it.  And if she's the one hired, a space will open up I can apply for. Do I want to be here forever? No, but I will take benefits and job security while I continue to look closer to home.  Rocking the boat right now may be a bad idea with that scenario. So I think I need to wait and see what plays out with a new boss. If they hire externally, and the new person doesn't remedy this, I'll probably go to management because there won't be any long term prospects here at that point anyway.

  • Are there any legal consequences to you doing these conferences?  (ie, loss of funding for your position because you are not performing the outlined tasks) Or is there the potential that your agency could be sued because of something you say or do in the conferences because you are not properly trained (liability argument)?

  • That's probably a good plan of attack.  The new boss will probably shift things up, so anything you do now will get rearranged later.

Sadly, Lucky, the answer to both your questions is yes, but my management is aware of these things and doesn't care. It's more important to get the job done than to make sure it's done right along the way. Well, technically, the second question is a no. I think we have governmental immunity from being sued. But I could have complaints lodged against me. Nothing should affect my standing as a lawyer because I'm not doing them in a legal capacity, so at least I'm safe in that respect.
