What say you? Is this sad?

I don't think I would use the term "best friend" as an adult. I guess I have someone who I think of sort of in that way, but I don't think I'd call her that because there are other people I'm very close to.
I usually say, "she's one of my best friends" about a handful of people.

My best friend has been the same person since 5th grade (except for a period in 7-8th grades when we were arch-enemies). Early next year is our 25th anniversary. We went away to the Dominican Republic to celebrate our 20th anniversary. We're awesome like that.

I have one "best friend" and that's because we were raised together like sisters but it's too confusing to say "my sister" because she's not. But it's like we're sisters. So I'll call her my best friend. We don't talk all that often anymore (she lives in NJ), but I can't imagine sustaining a relationship this long with anyone else without any of the usual ups and downs. She's someone I can call after 6 months and there's no weirdness or "Soooo, where have you been for the past 6 months?" resentment and vice versa. I'm only now starting to realize how rare and valuable this is.
Other than that, I have people that I'd say "He/she is one of my closest friends." That I don't feel needs to be reciprocal because, as was said, people have different levels of closeness and different ways of valuing friendship.
Husbands should be like Kleenex: Soft, strong, and disposable.

I would be shocked if the person I consider my BF considers me hers. She's my 2nd longest friendship in SF and the one on only two people I kept in some sort of contact with during my hermit depression period. But she has a sister and has kids, and just lots of reasons to have other different close and longer lasting friendships. We're not very much alike, but to go all blewmie on y'all I don't think I am much like anyone. I wondered if I should feel sad that I doubt I am her best friend. but I don't. So I guess that's good.
