  • The St. Tammany area (across the lake from New Orleans) has a great school district from what I've heard, we even have a teacher on our board that teaches in one of the public schools.  I'd look at Slidell, Mandeville or Covington.  A lot of people from those cities commute to New Orleans.  Page Aligator, she lives in Slidell and could probably give you some info on that.

  • I've lived in NOLA for 4 years now.. Northshore is great for a family or for someone who's looking to retire... Your husband would have to cross Lake ponchatrain everyday, however, which is no fun, especialy when there is lots of fog.  It takes about 30 minutes everyday to cross the bridge.  The public schools are AWESOME, though.  It's pretty expensive to live there though.  I do have a house in Covington that I'm looking to sell though, hint hint... LOL...

We live in the Uptown area, which in my opinion is the best area to live.  Close to Audubon park and lots of restaurants, bars and entertainment.  Many young professionals live in this area.  Please know that if you do live in the city, you should NOT under any circumstances send your child to public school--you will be setting them up for failure... Unless it's a Magnet school like Ben Franklin.  The school system is god awful.

Kenner and Metairie along with the West banks are 'just ok' places to live.  I would never live there, but it's much cheaper to do so.  Again public schools there are awful.

If you have any questions, you can PM me :-)  good luck!

  • Is your husband going to be working in New Orleans proper? If so I wouldn't look at Baton Rouge as a living option, the commute is too long. The houses on the north shore are only expensive depending on where you are currently, it's all relative. But as the pp mentioned, if you do not move into an area with a great school district you have to consider private school tuition as part of your living expenses. She wasn't exaggerating on how bad some of the public schools can be.

  • thanks ladies!!  i'll look into all the places that were mentioned.  my hubby's office is in new orleans.  i don't know the exact location.  we are excited for the move.  just don't know much about the city, so it's a little scary.  :0)

  • I'm from New Orleans area. If you want to stay on the south shore and avoid the Causeway, consider Destrehan in St. Charles Parish. I'm from there, lived in the parish for over 20 years and can honestly say that the public schools are awesome. When I worked in New Orleans, it was a 20 minute commute in the mornings and 30 minutes on the way home.
  • We make the commute between Slidell and the Northshore quite often, and I work with a few teachers who do it everyday. Slidell is a great area (along with Mandeville and Covington). The public school are very good and housing is not all that much (compared to New Orleans and BR).

My husband is a realtor here and works in both New Orleans and the Northshore. If you'd like more info on any places PM me. Good luck with your move!

  • Ormond Estates in Destrehan. 15 minutes to the city in the morning. And that was before the interstate expansion. Great neighborhood.

THANK YOU! I thought everyone was hating on Dhan. Red Church Subdivision is also pretty nice, by the way (and a good bit cheaper). :)
