New to Atlanta...please help

I think it?s time to put my big girl pants on and introduce myself.  My name is Katie (hence the screen name) and I got married in May.  I?m originally from Michigan and moved to Houston in early 2009.  Now my H and I are moving to Atlanta in mid December due to him being transferred to another position.  His office is located in Alpharetta and we?re not sure where to live.  We would like to rent a house and I know realtors can?t tell you if the area is safe or not.  So, this is why I?m asking for help.  Where should we live?   TIA

  • Alpharetta is a great place to live. Roswell is also close and if you want to live away from the city you could do Cumming. You want to live as close to where you work as possible. I live in Woodstock/holly springs and both me and my husband drive to alpharetta and have no problems, but we also take back roads to work. It takes about 30 mins to get to alpharetta from here. It is cheaper to live in Holly springs/woodstock than it is Alpharetta. If you go end up liking woodstock/ holly springs I would stay on the east side of 575.

  • Hi Katie, welcome. I can't help much with where to live as I am not familiar with Alpharetta at all! It's best to live close to work as possible because the traffic here is a nightmare.
  • Welcome!

Everyone will tell you this - LIVE WHERE YOU WORK. Traffic is horrendous around here.

Alpharetta is an extremely nice area, and very safe, and the schools are good. You can't go wrong living there. You can also be in Roswell and be in a reasonable driving distance, or Cumming. My vote would be to stay in Alpharetta though, you'll really like it.

Exactly what P&R said. Alpharetta is a great place to live.

  • Ditto everyone. If I had to live in the burbs, Alpharetta is one of the only three cities I would consider. Welcome and good luck.

  • Welcome! Alpharetta is a very upscale suburb for the most part. You also won't go wrong living in Roswell, Sandy Springs, or Cumming. There are rentals at all price points.

    agreed.

Traffic is so crazy here. You will figure out very quickly that the amount of time you spend in traffic will directly affect how much you like Atl!!

  • Welcome!  I'm from MI too....what part are you from?

We just moved to the area about 2 months ago and so far we love it!  We were previously in SC and then had to relo here so this is my first full year living in the South!  FI is from AL, so he's used to it but I really like it here.  We're renting right now as well and have a lease to buy option, which I think we're going to take next year.

Definitely find something close to work.  Even here in the suburbs/country, traffic is terrible!  It can easily take you an hour to go 20 miles!

  • I guess we'll live in Alpharetta.  Thank you ladies for your help!  I'm definitely looking forward to going back to state that has seasons...I really miss fall!

Martinilove: I lived an hour north of Detroit.  I'm from Shelby Township and husband is from Rochester Hills.  Where are you from?

I'm from Grand Rapids, but I have friends from Rochester Hills!  You'll definitely get Fall here, but not until later in the year; it's definitely later than MI's Fall!  Welcome...I hope you enjoy it here!  You'll have to come to one of our GTG's sometime!
