study: physicians & gifts (f/u to earlier thread)
i saw this in the paper this morning and it made me think of the discussion you girls had a few days ago.
Re: study: physicians & gifts (f/u to earlier thread)
Hm. I understand where these doctors are coming from. It's not uncommon during med school to feel used and walked all over by the school and the process itself. Although, like before, I'm still not sure to what extent doctors are prescribing based on these "gifts." I'm sure it varies by the wealth of a region.
In my almost 24 years of going to pediatricians, primary care doctors, gynos, psychologists, urologists, dermatologists, emergency rooms and immediate care facilities (this makes me sound sicker than I am, haha) I can honestly say I have never been prescribed something because the doctor was given a gift. Usually they prescribe me the generic when there is one (and I don't believe generics have reps, but I could be wrong) and when there isn't one, it's usually a drug I've never heard of/seen a comemercial for. When I need an antibiotic the doctor has on more than one occasion explained me why I was taking this one as opposed to that one because of the different way they work. ie: "I'm giving you bactrim because it's more effect on this kind of bacteria that is causing your UTI than this other antibiotic."
There's my two cents for now.

i agree, panda. i've never felt that any one drug has been pushed on me. but then, i have rarely questioned anything i've been RX'd, so they could be defaulting to a certain drug as a result of gifts without me even knowing. but frankly, i don't really care either. if it works, that's all i care about.
i just saw the article and thought i'd pass it along, that's all
