How do you choose a new PCP?

I really need to stop driving 30+ minutes to go to my doctor.  But I have no idea how to choose a new one.  I looked at the list of doctors from my health plan, but what do I do from there?  Do I just pick one that looks good and hope it works out?  Can I call them to find out office policies on appointments, hours, average wait time for a physical?

Re: How do you choose a new PCP?

  • Word of mouth.

Or you can just choose from your insurance list. I like group practices, so if I don't love the dr. I chose, I can just bounce around the group until I find one I like.

    GL!

I tried word of mouth but my friend recommended a guy who is like 60 years old.  I'd rather not have to do this again in a few years when he retires!  So that is out.

I was thinking a group practice might be good, too.  I wish doctor offices would make websites!  I feel like I am just guessing at who might be working together by looking at addresses.

    Thanks!

  • Do you have a Harvard Vanguard group close to you?
  • Kind of... like 20 minutes driving.  I was hoping to keep it more like 10.  That is a good idea though.
  • I think Punky and I are both fans of Harvard Vanguard. I feel like a broken record with how many times I've raved about them.  I pretty much just try to stay within that practice now whenever I can; I've been really happy with everyone I've encountered there.

I agree that word of mouth would be best, but otherwise I also just try them out and move around if I have to. I've had really good luck with my last two PCPs (unfortunately my current one isn't accepting new patients).

Sometimes Googling will pull up reviews on individual doctors.

    Me too!

I got lucky and found my doctor through a friend and it happened to be a HV location (Burlington). That doctor has left, but at my initial appointment I actually saw the PA and loved her. So I always go to her now. She was ony 15 minutes when I lived with my parents; now it's 30 minutes. But I still go since I have to take a day off from work anyways. I even went to a different HV location, also 30 minutes away to see a female derm still within HV.

I highly recommend HV. I've never had a problem with them and they are always nice and usually on time.

Oh oh oh, do like the derm you went to see?  If so, could you give me his/her name?  I'm thinking of going to see one and if they're in HV, even better!  Which location?

And ditto the on time comment.  I don't think my doctor has ever had me waiting more than 10 mins., which is amazing in these health care times.

I went to Dr. Cokonis in Wellesley. I liked her and she was very approachable (she's petite). She was happy that I was being proactive about my skin health.

Haha, is being petite what makes her more approachable? :)  Wellesley would work OK for me, though it was a lot more convenient when I used to work up the street!

Thanks for the rec.  And, dang, she does have good skin in her pic!

  • Dermatologists must feel huge pressure to keep their skin looking good as they age!  I never thought about that before.

I think I found a group practice near me.  I will try that one out and if it doesn't work, drive the extra 10 mins to HV.  Thanks for the input!

I am dying LOL over this. With the afternoon I have had, I needed that desperately!

I wasn't expecting her to be short. Since I'm small I expect people to tower over me and it can be a little intimitating. I was nervous that a derm would get on my case for not using sun screen as much as I should, but when she walked in I thought there would be no way she could intimitate me if she tried. Obviously she wanted to know my sun screen use history and sun exposure, but not in a negative way to scold me.

ETA: I was also really nervous about going because I have a lot of "beauty marks" and the chances of one being abnormal just due to the high amount I have was pretty likely. I just felt more at ease due to her stature and personality. Oh, and I did have to have one removed that day. But I didn't feel a thing.

This is too cute and totally cracks me up Smile  C'mon, you're tough, you could take someone bigger than you!

  • I think it's rather hard to change PCPs. There is a shortage of PCPs in Mass and it's hard to find ones that are accepting new patients. It does depend on insurance too but it can be difficult.

  • I still drive 45 minutes to see mine because I just can't part with her.  She is too fantastic.
